If I am removing bioballs from a wet/dry filter, is there anything I can do with the area that once had the bioballs?

I put a small layer of filter fiber in mine and that will catch all the extra food and ect that finds its way into the overflow.

If you don't have a refuge, you could place it there that's what i'm doing

how do make a fuge out of it, does it fill with water when the bioballs are not there like the sump area of the filter?

No it wont fill with water, but if you dont want the water falling to cause bubbles you can add liverock. If you want to start a semi fuge you can put liverock in the submerged area of the sump. This will act as a safe haven for pods to collect, multiply and grow.

I have a picture of my modified wet dry filter on my gallery. I kept some of the bio balls in there and slowly removed them. The bio balls are completely removed now.

problem is my sump area is less than 10 gallons (which thre return pump takes up most of), and i have a hood so i cant add a hang on fuge. Would it make sense to buy a whole new sump once all the bioballs are out? I need a fuge to help lower the trates.

fill it with live rock you did the right thing by removing the bio balls. the live rock does not need to be submerged the water will trickle over it just like the bio balls

If the rock is not cured will it matter? or will the existing rock be able to sustian the ammonia spike?
