Ok there is a LFS that has Lime stone in it's salt water tanks, and they sell it. I take it there is no problems with using this as "base rock" right???

I like it because it's CHEAP (nothing else in this hobby is LOL) I've already got about 30# of "good" live rock in there, but I really want to get as much in as I can.

Ive never heard of anyone using limerock so my guess would be not to try it. You can get tuffa rock or plain baserock for around $1-2 a lb.

The limerock at my lfs looks differen't then the tuffa rock. It may be mislabed or something along the lines.

Well the've got it in all their tanks. I would think that it would be helpful, because of being lime stone it's made of calcium right?

I have read somewhere that the problem with the limestone is that while cheap and initially attractive, it turns green with algae fairly quickly.

id go with cheap baserock, better safe than sorry, i remember a thread a while back that the limestone leaches something in the water and wasnt recommended, if tbs is limestone, they leave the rock in the ocean for years, i think this would get most of the leached stuff out

What do you think live rock is?

It is limestone.

Base rock?

Limestone.

There are different forms, but chemically it is all the same.

sjm817, yes TBS is just limestone.

geologist...maybe listen to him.

I've heard of several people using limestone (hirocks.com sells it--I think it's limestone). I'm about ready to use close to 100# of holey limestone for my 90 gallon, along without about 70# of live rock.

 :reading: well Again the LFS has it in ALL their tanks, with little feather dusters on some of it (it is "bare" rock but I figured thats ok)

Guess I'll have to give this some more thought??? any more comments LOL
