I thought I'd start a thread for new members and introductions. The NVR group started off pretty small and many of us know eachother by first name now. I'd like to encourage anyone new (or not so new) to the club to post a little about yourself and/or your tank.
I remember my first ever reef club meeting and not knowing anyone (different club) was a little intimidating. After posting in the forum I found it easier to approach people at meetings and I met all kinds of crazy reefers :D

I'll go first :)
My name is Jacob (or Jake if you prefer). My current tank is a 75g mixed reef that is just over 2 years old. I've swapped a lot of corals in and out but finally tried to settle on some that I really liked and leave them alone. Almost everything in the tank has been grown from very small frags so it is rewarding to see some of the corals starting to fill in the spaces now that I'm letting them do their thing.
Other than reefing I'm into outdoor activities with my wife and friends, especially snowboarding. I'm looking into doing some beer brewing in the near future too!
Look for the tall guy with glasses and spikey hair at the next meeting and that would be me!

Hello, I'm Thayer,
4th year student at UOP. Current tank setup is a 11gal DIY nano cube, with a 10gal sump (~6 gals of water in it). Will be the home to a mixed population of corals (hard and soft) as well as a fish or two.. In addition to reefing, I like traveling, computer games, photography and generally being outdoors..
I'm glad that my girlfriend puts up with my expensive hobbies ;)

Hello!
My name is Sandra, I have a 12 gallon nano at work. I have two fish, Jack and Trogdor that keep me entertained everyday, and a Randall pistol shrimp...named Randall of course. I have tried having a mixed tank but I have decided that I am going to stick with the softies. I have an especially big nepthea that needs to be fragged soon.
I have had my tank for about 1 1/2 years and while it seems things grow slowly, looking back at my old pictures and seeing the tank now, shows me how quickly things have grown. It is pretty cool. My other hobbies are reading, snowboarding, shopping for shoes, and starting projects but not finishing them.

Well I guess it's my turn to say something huh!
My name is Greg I have a 40 gallon at home mostly softies with about 5 fish. I recently entered the world of having a sump! I also have a 12 gallon nano at work with all softies at the moment.
About me: I've been employed at The Record for the past 18 years in the IT dept. As far as hobbies I like to collect fingernail clippings from aliens, I'm into dirt art and I really enjoy a good egg salad sandwich! Kidding.. of course.. well not about the fingernail clippings! As for the real hobbies I've really been getting into the Stockton Thunder hockey, doing audio and video projects, playing music [guitar, mandolin] with friends and that's about all I have time for anymore.. oh and tivo!

My name is Josh , I am still in the planning stages of my setup but I should be going in a few months. I have a 72 BF RR with an ASM G2 and oceanic model 1 sump, mag 9.5 for return. thats it so far, still working on the rest. I plan on 2x250 with some sort of actinic, about 125 lbs LR and a 4-5" DSB with flow coming from a CL system as i dont like powerheads. But that is all subject to change at a moments notice. I dont post much but I sure am a good lurker. Thanks for letting me introduce myself

Hi Josh. Nice to meet you.
It sounds like you've got a pretty good plan together for your first reef tank. If you have any questions or just want to talk shop feel free to use the forum; our club as well as the rest of Reef Central has a lot of info to offer! And of course if you can make it out to a meeting you're definitely welcome to come by.

Well, My name is Tommy and new to this forum and to this hobby for that matter. I am an absolute beginner to this. I recently was given what seems to be a 45 gal tank and an 10 or 12 gallon tank. I think I will use the 45 as a QT tank and the 10/12 as a sump maybe. But like I said absolutely new to this. I hope to meet some of you soon! I wont be able to make the meeting this weekend as I have to work. I work a 6 on 3 off graveyard schedule. I am glad that there are people in my area that can help with the god awful amount of questions I will be asking. LOL Talk to you all soon!

Thought id introduce myself. My name is Nick. Ive been keeping saltwater fish for about 14 years. I worked at a LFS in stockton for 3 years and a LFS in modesto for a year. I now own my own business and create/maintain large scale tanks. I also sell wholesale and lease tanks privately to my customers. I currently have 2 80g tiered with a 60g sump. Both 80's full of coral and the 60 sump is a fuge with mud. I also have a 90g tall with discuss in my living room. No one is really an expert at this hobby and I cant wait to learn everyones tips and techniques.

I currently live near Stockton. Ive actually been out of retail for about a year now. Im in the process of building a 2 car garage in my backyard for the housing and storage of aquariums. My plan is to get some huge tanks running for frags, to be traded, sold and placed into tanks im creating. Also for the acclimation of rare angels, tangs and wrasses, this way assuring success when i do put them into aquariums. My experience is mostly broad range and i focused more on selling products when i was in retail. Now im looking to specialize in large scale reef. ***** has asked me to come work for ********* on the weekends to help educate some of the workers there. Hopefully i can get him to put halides on the two 180 plexis he has. Basically i will be there to pass on my knowledge to the employees while selling products. should be fun. i worked at *******, and when i quit ***** was hired. I then went to tropical haven and worked for ***, till i quit there. If anyone would like to contact me i have MSN : NickFontane@yahoo.com

Sounds like a good plan. Captive propagation is big these days and a great way to minimize the impact of our hobby on wild reefs. A lot of people in the club are into fragging and trading frags. Sooner or later NVR will host a frag swap or similar event, although in the NVR tradition we want to make sure we put our own spin on it :)

I also, just started setting a 50 gal reef, for my fiance. So so could put what ever we reject from the main tank.
I would like to be part of this NVR to learn more about this hobby from more experience reefer. Also to buy or trade corals and equipments.

Hi,
I'm Billy and I am full time student at Delta College to be an Network Technician. Yes, I will be going to 3 night classes in Tracy. Eck!
I started the saltwater hobby 1 1/2 years ago. I'm still learning, yeah, I killed all corals but 4 1.5 years old fishes are still happy swimming. I believe that the 20 gallon tank is harder to control due to chemical spikes, temps, and others. I wanted to upgrade to 90 gallon tank. I had been working on the list with help from Danny at Carter's. Before I spend $3k, I need your options on those lists.
Jacob D
07/10/2006, 12:04 PM
Hi Billy. Good to see another Stocktonian reefer :)
I attended Delta College as well, and acutally worked there part time while going to school. I was working for Sal Vargas as a network tech - the last I heard he became an instructor there (was the former network admin). Is he still around that you know of? If so tell him Jacob says hi! Ok enough about me :D
20g is a little more tricky than say a 90, but experience plays a part too. You made a good decision to ask the club for input also (nothing against Danny - but you can't beat the combined experience of a reef club). I'll take a look at your 90g thread and give you my thoughts.
Welcome aboard, if possible I hope you can make the BBQ this month, or maybe a future meeting. (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=875515)

I have a 72 gallon Oceanic bowfront w/built in overflow, a little over 100 lbs. of live rocks, I'm using crushed corals for my substrate and some live sand, 48'' Coralife metal halide, (3) 900 maxijet powerheads, 15 gallon Oceanic sump, and a protien skimmer, I think thats all I have.
Current residents; (1) Sailfin Tang, (2) Percula Clowns, (1) Firefish, (1) Lawnmower Blennie, (2) Cardinals, (2) Coralbanded Shrimps that spawns every 2 weeks or so, (3) Peppermint Shrimps that I just got to kill my 5-6 aptasia before they take over( I've tried lemon juice), (4) Clams mixtures in size and species, and of coarse my mixtures of softies and shrooms.

Hi there..the name is Ryan. I'm a 24 year old guy living up North in Stockton. I'm a SSC at Uni of Phnx in Modesto. (Yup I'm a commuter) I just started this very new very expensive hobby from what I've seen so far. My buddy got me into this and I like how Saltwater fish look compared to Freshwater. I like to skateboard for a hobby and I also collect Jordan shoes. (I know sounds funny but hey I like it hehe). Hmm I dunno what else hahaha. I seen posters for NVR at discount pet and thought I'd give it whirl since I'm on other boards for other various things.
Like I said I'm new so I have a 29gal tank. 2lbs of LR about 15lbs of base rock, 1 inch layer of "live sand." I'm running the Fluval 305 pump and heater. I have 4 Damsels in my tank. 1 Sgt, 1 Yellow tail, 1 3 striped, and a Chromis. The tank has been up and running for about 3 weeks now. All the fish seem to be happy and swimming all about. All my levels are all good also my salt level is good also. I use a liquid kit I bought at Twins. :) So just thought I'd say "Hi" maybe one day I'll get to meet some of you!

Ryan - Welcome.
Hey, just a few questions:
- fluval 305 canister filter : What media are you running in the canister filter and/or how often do you clean it out?
- Did I count correctly that you have 8 fish now in your newly setup 29G tank that's been running for 3 wks?
- What are your current Specific Gravity, Nitrate, Nitrite and Ammonia levels if you don't mind me asking?

I'm running the media that came with the Fluval. BioRock and the charcoal. Actually I only have 4 fish in the tank. 4 Damsels total. I'm using already cycled water from a friends tank ABout 20gal worth in a 29gal and just added mixed RO water to fill the rest. All his readings were good. I let the tank run 3 weeks before the fish going in. I just thought maybe with the already cycled water it'd be ok. Just had to let the natural things attach to the newer canister and other things. The live sand was already cycled also. I got most of the things used IE. tank, heater,ls... I bought the canister and glass top new from Twins. My current stats I dunno, but I'll know tomorrow. When I do the cleaning of the brown algae stuff growing on the glass.
plankton
02/03/2007, 05:31 PM
Sounds good! Yeah, I've been wiping diatoms off my glass every day for the last week so I think I'm due for a water change...
Scott

02/03/2007, 06:06 PM
Is that what that brownish stuff is? Diatoms?
plankton
02/03/2007, 06:16 PM
Probably.
If the canister has a foam pre-filter you might need to wash it often or just not add it the next time you service the filter. Otherwise, detritus may just clog it up very quickly in a reef tank.
Otherwise, it looks like you did your homework before setting up your tank. Good for you.

02/03/2007, 06:59 PM
Ryan,
What kind of lighting do you have and what are you using for water movement?
RiOnRoxXx
02/04/2007, 03:18 PM
Plankton: The canister's only media and fiters are just three little bags of carbon and those BioMax rock things. I was told just to clean these out every 3 months or so. Maybe I was steered wrong. ::shrugs:: I just had a little of that brown stuff growing on the side of the tank nothing serious. Cleaned it up now it's gone.
Montra:I'm running are regular fluorescent bulb light and single housing at the moment. I read that that kind of light is just asking for that kind of algae to grow. I went to Kalypso's yesterday and I think I'll be picking up a new Power Compact or Halide still I don't know which way to go. I know I'll probably get a bigger tank soon here after 6 months or so, so I leaning towards the Halide. As for water movement I don't have any powerheads yet. I was thinking a MaxiJet 600 since my tank is so small don't want to over do it just quite yet. But since my pump is rated for a 70gal my 29gal I think is getting good movement out of my Fluval. If one of the Damsels gets in the way of the "out" tube he gets blown almost all the way to the other side of the tank. :)
Jacob D
02/05/2007, 08:40 PM
You should determine what lighting to get by the corals that you plan to keep. If you're planning to keep mostly softies and/or LPS then Power Compact lighting is fine. If you want to keep some of the more light demanding corals (most SPS), clams, or anemones then you'll need metal halide or T5 lighting. In fact even if you're just keeping softies I'd recommend T5 but only use about half as many watts as you would have with PC.
If you stick with live rock and fish only, then the standard fluorescent lighting that you have is fine.
If you start to keep corals you may want to slowly remove the bio-media from your Fluval and only run carbon. The bio-media will be producing nitrates constantly.
RiOnRoxXx

Ok cool, I was thinking just soft corals for now. But with the ways things seem to be I might want to do maybe hards in the long run. This hobby is SOOOO addicting! :bum: So the Bio media is to be slowly removed out? If I decided to get more involved into this? I can see how it would effect with the nitrites since all the water is cycling in it's own garbage filth I guess you can say. Cool thank you for all the help. Guess I gotta just wait it out and see what the good ol' pocket book says after I buy these Jordan's I've been lookin for, for almost a year...hahahaha I know I know....weirdo huh :)

I was thinking about helping with a donation and become a full access member towards the NVR. I know I haven't been active for to long on these boards but feel like I should contribute to local area organizations that provide great services like the NVR. I'm thinking about using paypal and wanted to know how I should go abouts doing this. Unless there is an address I can send a check or MO to? Let me know guys :)

Hi all,
My name is Barb. I am new to Reef Central, but not to the hobby. I’ve been a fish enthusiast since my first guppy tank a billion years ago. Since that time I have never not had a tank of some sort. In 1990 I got certified in SCUBA (It’s like swimming in a giant aquarium…SO AWESOME!). After that I set up my first salt tank. It didn’t last long as it was expensive and was hard to keep stuff alive in a 10g.
Currently I have a plethora of various aquatics. My pride and joy are, a 135g freshwater I have had for 18+ years and currently houses African Cichlids;
a 29g I got 2 yrs. ago and set up FOWLR. It was beautiful, but last summer’s heat and vacation killed everything but the blue devil. It is now back up to par and I even have a couple mushrooms. (The lighting is not enough for much else.).
And the last of my pride and joy is a 75g reef in the making. The tank has been running for 2 mos, with a couple pieces of live rock, 50lbs of sand, 6 chromis, and a carpet of diatoms. I am in the process of making a 20g long into a sump, and may try building a DIY protein skimmer… (Any suggestions or links for this would be appreciated).
I am trying to do it right so am reading a lot… That’s what brought me here.
Thanks for all the good info. I am looking forward to maybe seeing you on the tours and at meetings.

The best place for DIY skimmer plan is probably the DIY forum of Reefcentral. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=3
Instead of DIY have, you thought about the Octopus skimmer? They're fairly cheap and highly raved. You can find them in the low $100. You can check on ebay for them.

Hi all. My name is Chris. I live and work in Tracy, CA. I started my first reef in June '07. There is a photo of my set-up in the 'My Gallery" section. My focus has been mostly Acroporia and Montiporia. But being a newbie I also have the following invertbrates; 2 serpent stars, porites with xmas worms, crocea clam, coco worms, blastmussa, mushrooms, ricordias, green star polyps, zooanthids and actively pulsing xenia. At one time I had a robust cleaning crew but lately I've been culling out hermits and nassarius snails. Resident fish include bartlett's anthias, baggani cardinal, chromis', sailfin and kole tang, xmas wrasse and a yellow watchman goby. I don't plan on modifying the stock list anymore than this but I'm always on the look out for more SPS especially a green and purple plating montiporia. I use chaeto in my refugium and cull a large amount every couple of weeks. Usually I throw it in the trash but I post to see if anyone wants it for free.
I'm also a huge snowboarder. So if anyone is really into steeps, deeps, bumps and hiking let me know. I usually ride solo but always am looking for someone to ride/ski with.

Welcome to the club. Hope you can make it to a meeting soon. Looks like you have a nice setup, get some closeup shots!
Where do you ride at? Before this year I was getting about 30 days a year in at Kirkwood. Due to work and other stuff this is the first in a while that I haven't had a pass. I've cut a lot of boot tracks on the ridge lines up there and used to be in pretty good shape. We did a short hike about 2 weeks ago and I got owned... hitting the bar for a couple hours before didn't help either :hmm5:
I'm getting a little too old to go off in the park but I still have love for cornices, cliff drops, and powder cartwheels.

Hi,
Name is Jess. Just moved down from the NW. I've been doing saltwater about 8yrs now, worked up to small sps farm in Eugene, Or. That was a couple of moves ago. Just moved to Stockton, have assembled my greatest work yet. 300 gallons with all the bells and whistles! I'm in the process of building a filtration room on the end of the house, after which I hope to punch a hole in the wall and have a display tank in my family room.
I've been in a couple of small reefer clubs, always enjoyed the stories, swapping frags and learning from others. I hope to catch the next meeting as I'm out of town this for this months meeting. I've been stomping around Sac and Stockton for a couple of months now trying to find you guys, Ryan finally tipped me at Carters. Looking forward to meet everyone!

Hello everyone! I am so glad that I found you. I am brand new to this hobby unless you can count a 50g freshwater aquarium we have at my house when I was a little kid. yup he is chillin inside the big corner rock nearest the overflow. He hasn't come out of the rock since we took those couple of pictures in the very beginning LFS guy said that thats fine so long as he is bright blue and moving around a little bit... he is just stressed out. But I am worried about him and I hope he is going to make it.... even though he is not supposed to be in there yet.

Ryan,
Welcome aboard! Looks like a good start, nice size tank to start with too.
Has your tank cycled yet? If it's as new as it looks the LFS guy did you wrong by selling you the fish. One of the first lessons everyone in this hobby learns (or should learn) is - unless you have built a good relationship with your LFS you have to be very careful about taking any advice they give you. That's why we're here though, so feel free to ask questions or get a second opinion from the folks in the club.

04/18/2008, 02:46 PM
Thanks for your input Jacob... I mentioned on the website tat the Blue Tang was a bit of an accident... Kind of a funny story actually :o) The night we went to pick up the Live Rock we were in a bit of a hurry cause the store was trying to close and in the process of collecting the rock, and placing it all in buckets for transport, the tang was caught in a rock and transported DRY to our home 30 minutes away! Crazy! We noticed him over two hours later once he dislodged himself from the rock...
First thing we did was call Ted, our LFS guy, at almost 10pm! He said it wasn't ideal but we were worried that trying to catch him would cause even more stress to the fish and be close to impossible at that. So we decided that keeping him for the time being would be his best shot. The next day the LFS guy brought us food and a live plant as food for the tang, after he'd closed his store. Couldn't tell you how helpful and knowledgeable he's been... Not to mention the lowest prices we've seen thus far...
Back to your first question... Yes, the tank is cycled. We started the tank with Live sand, Live rock and water from an established tank and didn't really experience a cycle at all.

04/18/2008, 02:53 PM
To be quite honest, I dont know that much about all of the types that are out there. We are still both learning. I think for now more of the hearty soft corals, and then later the hard or rigid corals

That is a crazy story! You don't hear much about fish hitch hikers very often, especially not tangs!

Afternoon ~
Spose I'd better introduce myself... I'm Alethe... The other half of Ryan's reef tank ;)
FYI ~ Little update on the nameless Tang... He is doing MUCH better! He's now moving around a lot more and eating quite energetically... Good news :)
I myself was born and Raised near the ocean in South Africa. When Ryan came up with this idea for a reef tank it was like getting a little piece of Home to put in the livingroom. I've kept and sold Freshwater fish from South American and African Cichlids to Bettas and Livebearers for over Ten Years but never ventured into Saltwater.
So basically, we'd appreciate all the input you can give us and would love to share our adventure :)
Thanks!

Alethe,
Glad to have you with us also. You'll come to find that reef keeping is one of the craziest addictive hobbies that you can get yourself into! It's more of a lifestyle than a hobby really. I hope you and Ryan can make it to an upcoming NVR meeting, in case you haven't done it already make sure to register on our website so you get meeting announcements emailed to you - and no worries, about 30% of NVR members are female (including the current President and VP) :)

OMG! Cool another reefer club! Stockton is a black hole and figured that I would have to attend a MARS meeting to get my fix.
I had various FW as a kid. awhile back I got back into FW and currently have a 29g planted mostly South American tank and a 5g planted with a Crowntail Betta and a couple African Dwarf Frogs.
I am currently a member of SAS and enjoy that club very much (drive sucks)
I took some of the money that Uncle Bush gave me and started a 20T salt tank. About 25lb sand/crushed coral and 23lb of live rock (thats finally getting some coraline algae). Equipment is 2 koralia nanos, a 65W PC (really want to upgrade to a 150W MH) and a rio skimmer. Oh, I also drilled a bunch of holes into a old breeder box for a sort of in tank mini-fuge.
My tank is drilled for a sump but not ready for that yet. After all, Murphy has my number and a grudge. I also scratched it so think it would be better served as a sump ('common, we all start small then always 'gotta get a bigger tank to house all this stuff').
I would really prefer a HOB 'fuge sort of like the CPR Aquafuge. Been thinking of getting that bak pak clone w/ fuge from aquatraders or ask if John at Twins can get one.
Oh yea the important stuff, livestock:
Sixline Wrasse
Purple Firefish
3 blue leg hermits
7? asteria (sp?) snails
3 snails (forget name but the sand sifters)
corals:
Kenya Tree
pom pom xenia (still a bit ****ed from the frag and move)
purplish zoa
and another that I forget the name but looks like a clove polyps.
the last 2 I got from Kalypso so gotta ask Elliot to verify next time I go.

Hey everyone...can't remember if I ever said hello or not on this thread, so if I did, hello again! If not, hello for the first time:)
Name's Brian, live in Modesto with a 75g reef-in-the-making. Currently have around 50-60lbs of base rock, 20lbs of live rock, running since May 1, 2008. Have a small CUC of around 7-8 blue mermits, 2 em. crabs, one blackish/brown hitchiker mithrax crab I see every once and a while, 5 trochus snails, a few nassarius snails and 3 margarita snails (mistake to buy, I know they are colder water snails but learned AFTER the fact).
I spend most of my time on Talkingreef.com, love the community there but am definitely lacking in the local contacts, so here looking to be a part of something more social :) Want to make it out to a few events and will hopefully not be the only newb!

Hello my name is Chris, I met Mike at Twins Aquarium in Stockton and he introduced me to NVR.
I've been reefing for about a year now and started out by buying a 12gallon Saltwater Eclipse system for my son Christian. It was his 1st B-day present and my wife had to twist my arm to try saltwater. I heard it was a difficult hobby and I thought I didn't have time for it. My wife has regretted talking me into it ever since.
Well, I ended up buying a used 100 gallon reef system after owning the 12 gallon for 2 months. The 12 gallon was limited on the lighting and volume and I wanted to try some corals, so I spent $600 on the established 100 gallon reef system. I ended up selling my 100 gallon and purchased a 95 gallon wave tank back in Dec.
Here are the specs on my current system.
95 gallon wave tank with 35 gallon fuge
Coralife 2x150 MH's, 2x96 Actinics, 4 LED moons
3 Koralia 4's for water movement
Euro-Reef Protein skimmer
150lbs of LR
150lbs of LS
Fish:
Blue Hippo Tang
Yellow Tang
Sailfin Tang
Maroon Clown
Perc Clown
Damsel
Chromi
Majenta Dottyback
Cleaner wrasse
Inverts:
XXL Pink Bubbletip hosted by my Maroon
200+ hermits
50 Nas snails
1 serpent star
1 Long Spined Urchin
6 Peppermint Shrimp
1 Fire Shrimp
2 Cleaner Shrimp
6 Emerald crabs
Corals:
2 Toadstools
Hammer
Torch
Frogspawn
Star polyps
Yellow button polyps
Colt
Finger leather
acan
Various Zoanthid colonies/Rocks
Pulsing Xenia's
Brain coral
2 Maxima clams
1 Crocea Clam
Various Purple, Red, and green mushrooms
Candy canes
Feather duster
Refugium:
Macro Algae
Chaeto
Red Lace
Ulva
Red Grac
It's been a very addicting and expensive hobby, but has been very rewarding which allows me to spend a few minutes out of my day to get my mind off of work. The next step for me is to try SPS and to look into more Acan's and Blasto's. I'm sure that I could learn alot from the experience of others from NVR and Reef Central. I look forward to talking to some of you guys

Now my son is 10 and loves science. It is going to be great to learn with him. I just got a Nanotuners JBJ 28g HQI cube.

Hi Paul, and welcome!
The 28g HQI is a sweet little setup. As far as Tracy, the one shop that I knew of out there has closed. You might want to start a new post to see what the other Tracy locals do.
Most people are making their own RO/DI water and mixing their own saltwater, but you might get some leads on pre-mixed saltwater. If nothing else you'll get to see who else is reefing around your neck of the woods :)

Sorry to hear about your losses over the last year. Were you able to figure out what the cause was? if you need any help from the club feel free to start a thread with your tank conditions and what you've experienced.
Regarding the meetings, they are always in Stockton at Valley Brewery. We sometimes have special events in other locations, such as our regional frag swap (Oct 2009) which will be in Tracy. You can always find out what's going on at the website www.nvreefers.org/events.php

Possibilities include ugly red slime outbreak of '07, the hair algae outbreak of '08, the closing of the fish store, & let's not forget the downward spiral of tank maintenance. Basically it was my own negligence. I lost my Kenya Tree (a gift from a customer of the fish store) & Pulsing Zenia (from a local veterinarian/customer)
I'm MUCH better NOW though...

What is the best place to get water in/near Tracy? I could get yelled @ for this, but here is what I do for water:
I buy the water from the machines. (sorry)
Then, I add my conditioner & I aerate it for a day, then I add my salt. Once I reach the desired salinity, I leave it in my plastic bucket (the kind that salt comes in) with a heater, power head and let that sit for another day. I have been doing it this way for as long as I have had salt water tanks, and it seems to work for me. (Tracy water sux) Hope that helped.

Evening all! I better introduce myself as I am sure I will be posting here quite a bit. This will be my first attempt at a SW tank, still on information overload but I'm coming around.
My setup consists of a 39g Cadlight tank, just finished making the stand and the next project is an LED light setup. Trying to get all of that finished before I actually start on getting the tank going. I have been buying things off and on from the forums here for the past few weeks, ended up with a ReefKeeper Lite, Tunze 9002, StevieT media rack and a few other odds and ends.
Anyway, enough talking here is my empty tank! Just waiting on the doors to finish off my stand:)

Getting ready to do a rebuild on my 300 gal Reef tank. I took in down 18 months ago to do a house remodel. I want to set it up a little different and better this time around so I will have plenty of questions.
I am glad I found this club and look forword to meeting fellow reefers

Welcome Mark :) Good thing about setting it up again is you can redo all those "wish I woulda..." things you can't while its up and running. Feel free to post away and get some input on the new setup!

Mark - Once, I made it nearly 6months without some form of reef tank...18 months must be the record. Also looking forward to your build thread especially for a large tank like a 300. Keep us posted and welcome to the board/club. Scott

I supose you could call it a combined effort really he wanted a tank , I told him it would be a ton of work ... I now do the bulk of the work and have spent wayy too much money on this and yet .. .. im always lookin for somthing new to buy >,< That tank there is the upgrade from a 55 , I think its pretty much full at this point just need to sit back and watch it grow :) , Now i need to get rid of the 55 lol its got some rock a small picaso trigger / snowflake eel and a pair of 6 lines in it along with like 5 random corals - palys , kenyas , GSP stuff like that. We also have a 20 gallon long with a few crabs a peacock mantis and small damsel. There are a few pics in the mantis forum ( whole reason i joined this site lol then i noticed your forums , ha )

I moved to the area about 3 months ago from Fresno and have been lurking for some time. I have had a nano-reef for over 3 years and am starting to get into sps but the move did not go so well and I lost some of my best pieces such as my acans, plate coral and yellow ricoridias but the bright side is I have been slowly adding new corals since. I look forward to meeting local reefers. Here is a before my move and after the move shot of my tank.

Welcome Jeff. Also sorry to hear your nano got stressed in the move, but looks like the tank is coming back. I too had a nano and loved it. Water changes were EASY. There are a number of official NVR events/meetings as well as unofficial fun trips to LFS, tank tours, etc. Maybe we'll see you at one...

My name is Chris. I have been toying with salt water aquariums for 5-6 years mostly FOWLR. I have tried some corals but with very limited success. I have done some inverts as well. My favorite tank was by far my 72 gal that was a predator tank( Huge lion fish, snowflake eel, puffer, and trigger). In my hayday I had a 178 gal, the 72 gal and a 35 gallon in a 2 bedroom apt. but when I moved I only had room for the 178. then I moved again and had no room for that big of a tank so I traded for a 55 that has been very sparse (AKA 3 fish and 30 lbs rock) I finally decided to get serious yesterday and upgraded to a 110 complete with new t-5 lighting and a new filter set up. hoping to start populating with some inverts and some corals. I am sure I will screw it up a few times along the way (I always do) but my wife and I are looking forward to a long fun journey. Thanks in advance for all the help I am sure I will get and I am looking forward to meeting all of the NV reefers.

Welcome to RC and to the NVR forum! Any pics of your 110G setup thus far? Sounds like your fifth setup and I'm sure given all that you have learned thus far that the build out will go fine. What do you plan to keep in your 110G?

Hello all, my name is Adan and i am new to this forum and new to salt water aquariums. ive spent some time doing some research and ive had my 55gal FOWLR set up for 2 weeks. its only got about 15 lbs of live rock right now (plan on adding more) some crushed coral and some lava rock.
i am from stockton CA and i just recently heard about the NVR. actually i heard about it last night from a guy i bought a light fixture from.
my plans for now are just to have a FOWLR set up and well established for a some time while i can do more research and prepare myself for corals..
ive seen some Beautiful tanks set up and that what im aiming for. i bought this 55 gal so i can get some experience with salt water under my belt but hopefully once i feel comfortable enough ill move up to a 180 gal.
like i said i am a newbie, so i know pretty much nothing of the types of corals , but i am eager to learn!
the one piece of advise i get from everyone is not to rush things. and i cant lie, i am impulsive and i cant wait!!! but i will.
i would love to become a member of the NVR, but i dont know how? and i dont know if i can because i have no knowledge of corals or anything. :sad2:
my sisters boyfriend is getting ready to set up his 180 gal so we are both addicted to this right now. he helps me out and i help him out. so he would like to become a member as well. what to do?
any advise is apreciated.. thank you !!

Unfortunately for those of you who are just getting involved with the club not much is happening this year, at least nothing is planned or being planned since everyone who was previously running the club stepped down and nobody would step in to take over.
No current contributing (read: paid) memberships are being accepted for the same reason.

A lot of new members! Welcome to NVR. Hopefully with some of the new attention to the club maybe someone will grab the reigns and bring NVR back to life. ;)

Hello everyone.
I own a 100 gallon Saltwater tank and a 50 gallon fresh water tank. I have had a fish only salt water tank for years now and I am in the process of converting it to a fish + reef tank. I'm on the road right now but boredom got the best of me and I decided to post an introduction. I've researched a few reef clubs in the central valley and I figured joining one would increase my success rates / money savings.
Thus far the only two fish I own which might pose a problem to a reef are the Potters Angel and the N. Trigger. So far they ahven't pestered anything I have put in so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Here is a complete list of what I currently have in my tank:
Fishies:
Potters Angel
N. Trigger
Maroon Clown
Inverts:
Cleaner Shrimp
Blue Legged Hermits x 15 (tiny)
Red Legged Hermit x 2 (medium)
LPS:
Frogspawn (6 branches)
SPS:
Digi Monti Frag (Orange)
Maybe a Steve Elias Stag Frag x 2 (not sure I believe the guy but they were cheap)
Miscl Acropora Frag
Soft Coral:
Mscl Leather Coral
Hairy Mushroom (Brown with green tips)
Hairy Mushroom (White with brown tips)
Various Live rock pieces I'll be using for aquascaping soon. I dont really care for the big "pile" look in my tank so I purchased some acrylic rods and will be creating a neat little design when I can find some mroe suitable live rock to use.
I need to get the digital camera charged up and take some pictures for you all to see. Likely get that done Monday night since this weekend is booked.
I have the following equipment for the tank right now:
Fluval Filter (under the tank)
Power head with phos filter and carbon filter
koralia Turbo Pump
Water Skimmer which hangs off the back of the tank
T12 + T8 lighting
I am saving my pennies to I can upgrade the lighting to a T5 setup. Any suggestions would be welcome in regards to a cheap T5 setup for my 100 gal. it is approx 5ft long so I am planning on getting a 48" x 4 setup. I also plan on building or purchasing a "sump" / refugium setup for the tank which will be located in the cabinet beneath it. I would like to have this lighted with some type of sea grass and copepods etc living in it.
Anyhow, glad to have found the forums. I'll be around

Hi Ben, and welcome. Sounds like you have a nice start on your reef. Regarding the T5 setup, I would recommend to stick with name brands and just keep your eyes peeled for any sales/promotions etc... If you don't mind buying used it's a buyer's market right now you just have to be patient and wait for the right setup to pop up on the buy/sell forum.

Hello all, my name is Vince and I am very new to this addicting hobby. I have been keeping fish for almost ten years, from basic goldfish to arowana, to frontosa and large colony of tropheus. I just feel like it is time for me to explore something new and different. So here I am, a proud new owner of a 90g bowfront salt water tank.
Currently all i have in my tank are live rocks, two clown fish, lionfish, and a foxface. I would like to meet some local guys with frags that they want to sale to get my tank up and going.
Any input and advice are all welcome. Vince

Hi Vince. Welcome to the addiction of saltwater!
If you're looking for frags etc... feel free to start a new post. This one is stuck at the top up here and sometimes get's over-looked. Make sure to post some details about your tank like lighting and flow so other members can suggest which corals will do best for ya.
