Can anyone identify this hermit crab? They were shipped as Scarlet Hermit crabs, however, they are nothing like the red legs I have gotten in the past. They were direct shipped from Florida if that helps. They are algae grazers so far and are about the same size as Scarlet Hermit Crabs.

Thanks

Looks like Calcinus tibicen, sometimes called the orange claw hermit.

You got it on the first try, thanks very much. I did a quick Google on the name and there it was. Unfortunately it brout up 3 working sites in english and none of those gave information about the safety of the crab in a reef. Do you have any idea if it is O.K.

Thanks again,

Leslie is a closet carcinologist. BTW, did you get an answer from the group that has the Giuana material?

I get those hermits all the time when I am collecting SRLs; I would guess they are about 10% of the population, just a guess.

I an not sure what SRL's stand for nor do I know what the group that has the Giuana material is. Could you elaborate as I am starting to feel like I have been spending too much time on the Canadian websites.

DON"T TELL ANYONE! I'll become an outcast, my worm friends will sneer & stop talking to me....:( I'll PM you separately about Guana; it's semi-good news.
