View Full Version : Blue spotted jawfish

I have a 2 month old blue spotted jawfish who has been healthy and very active. He is still active and eating - but he seems to be developing a sort of white film over the end of his body. I noticed today that he has some spots around his head. Almost looks ickish (?) Could this be?

Could be velvet/brook. Don't waste time, break out the copper!

Might be helpful if you post a picture. There are lots of posts/articles and pictures on-line of Ich/Brooklynella and Velvet - These are usual the suspects for the symptoms you are describing so it may help to read up as you're in the best position to tell what your fish has.
You should consider setting up a treatment tank - very difficult to treat these in you main display. In the interim, test your water parameters (and post), then change your water and provide some specific details of your situation. Otherwise it's very difficult to offer advice.

Time is of the essence. Start some formalin dips and then break out the copper, instead of hypo, because you don't know whether it is velvet or crypt

Hey, I want to thank you all for your responses and suggestions. As quickly as I tried to respond to the problem - I did not act quick enough. I am heartbroken that "Larry" did not make it. A lesson to be learned - have a quarantine tank!!! I was setting one up for him - and did everything I could to save him in the mean time. I now know that he was suffering not only from Ich, but also from velvet and brook. I am baffled at how he contracted these things - esp. since everything else is doing great. I do suspect however that my Scott's fairy wrasse has a bit of ich himself - but I am treating it quickly.
Being a Mother of 2 year old twins, people seem to think that I am completely off my rocker for having so much adoration and respect for my reef tanks and fish. I suspect that only those who subscribe to this web-site would understand.
Thank you again!
