I have a 135 oceanic, I just bought a 36" 280W Metal Halide Fixture; 150 watt HQI 20,000K double ended Halide, two 65 watt
actinic blue compact fluorescent bulbs and four blue LED night
lights. I've never had halide before, I want to have soft coral, have one nice colt now. My tank is 24" tall, so should the light sit on top like the coralife 2 x 96 watt ligtht I have now? or hang. If hang how far above the tank? I will us this new light on half the tank and look for another to buy for the other half. He is sending a 6100K bulb too. Point me to a link about halides or share your experience please.

I would stick with the 20 k bulb. the 6100K bulb is a bit low in the spectrum for a reef tank. It will look a bit yellow as well.
It should be hung 8-12 inches above the water.
