55 Gallon Stocking List

How does this list sound for a 55?

-Chainlink Eel
-Sargassum Angler
-Antenatta lion
-Kole Tang

I already have the eel and angler. Any suggestions will be accepted.

Everythings fine except the kole tang, it needs a minimum of 75 gallons, 90+ being optinum. Tangs are fish that need bigger than 4' to swim in order to burn off the constant food intake, maybe a yellow tang or some sort of dwarf angel?

No lionfish, they get bigger than your tank is wide.

Yellow tang it is. I just want a fish that will graze on algae 24/7

If you are set on a lion get a dwarf lion like a fu manchu , antennata's will get about a foot wide and even if it only gets 8 inches wide, do you really want to keep a fish in a tank that it can barely turn around in.

I have a volatian and a fu manchu(dwarf) they are both awesome. My 2 year old tells everyone about "his" lions. I have them in a 125 but will soon be upgrading to something at least 3feet wide to accomodete them long term. A dwarf would be a nice addition to your tank, and they are very hardy.

I'm skipping on a lion. Less fish=less bioload.

kole stays smaller than yellow usually, but i'd skip either--JMO

i agree, and personally if you have to do a tang i would go with the kole over a yellow tang. yellows are generally agressive twards tank mates, and the kole does a bettoer job of eating algae.

Maybe but according to liveaquaria.com kole tangs need more space than a yellow tang does. I dont recommend putting fish in tanks that are too small for them or soon will be either. I don't think that his other tank mates (eel, angler) will be too badly harrassed by the tang if they are added first and given proper time to establish domains. just my $.02

First, skip LFS or online tank requirement descriptions. Get the latin name and go to fishbase.org. It is probably the best empirical data (nobody's perfect) out there that I know of.

Second: get the fish you want if they fit in there, just be damn sure you can upgrade down the line when they need it. (as opposed to when it fits in the budget) So many people heretofore known as the "tang police" or "angel police" go tihsepa (read it backwards) when someone puts a tang or two in less than 500 gallons. It has become a running joke among some I know (professionals and amateurs alike) that "evertime someone puts a tang in less than 500 gallons god kills a baby".

Yes, fish benefit from larger tank space... However, many do just fine in smaller tanks as long as the water quality is kept good. What is okay for a 2" baby tang is far different for what is acceptable for a 2 foot plus Vlamingi...

If you do the lion I'd do a protein skimmer or double the water change schedule. Angler's tend to do best in species only tanks longterm since they will eat anything that fits in their mouth but can't compete well for food with anything that doesn't. Keep algae for the tang and know that you may have to do live feeder stuff for awhile with the lion.
