i just bought a 40 breeder and stand in anticipation of my upgrade from a 29 mostly zoo(65x4 PC) tank. the search isn't working right, but i'm thinking t5 lighting may fit the bill for a poor student on a budget in a modest apt. can anyone point me in the right direction as to # of bulbs to light a 40 breeder, best online site to order, etc. much thanks

For the best in T5's I'd get this:

http://www.reefgeek.com/products/categories/lighting/104188.html

For a cheaper alternative for now I'd get this:

i would say t5ho is your best bet for a zoo tank. all 5 kinds of zoos i have grow pretty fast under my 3x39w of t5ho

the site you are looking for is www.aqualuxlighting.com

i got my entire 3x39 t5ho retro with 2 ati blues one ge 6500k waterproof endcaps, workhorse5 ballast, the computer designed reflectors standoffs, and a power cord for 170 dollars shipped to my door.

and i have had the entire unit in service for 13 months so far, all driven by a workhorse5 ballast. and still no signs of hard start wear on the bulbs...

hows that for "poor student ona budget"?

my 35g is 36x17h x 12 deep

you may want to add a 4th bulb, but then you would need a w7 ballast because the 5 can only run 128watts total

40B is only 16" deep and is easy to light. Do you want a ready made hood or a DIY for a canopy? For a hood, an SLS TEK. For a DIY, there are more choices. Either way, I'd go 4 bulbs and 2 ballasts so you can do a dusk/dawn. 2 Aquablue and 2 Blue+ bulbs. You can replace 1 Aquablue with a GE day if you want. Some like the look, some dont. Personal preference.

BTW, good choice on the 40B.

I'm planning on setting up a 40 breeder as well, and I have just the same ideas. I'm going to diy personaly, but only because I can get the ballasts cheap at work with an employee discount, and everything else from extra is pretty easily found online. Sounds like a great way to light a zoo tank, btw, and from what I've seen and read, more then enough to keep em growing.
