I am going to build a 20 gallon sump and I was wondering what return pump I need to look into. Best quality for a reasonable price.

What size is your tank?? Are you looking for an internal or external pump?

People generally recommend 3-5 times tank volume through the sump per hour. For examply, a 100 gallon tank should have something like 300-500 gph flowing through it. Others will recommend the the return pump should match the flow rate through your skimmer.

I am going to guess you are looking at something like an Eheim or Quiet One pump. Both are internal (sit in the sump), don't make alot of noise, have good reliability, and arent that espensive.

It's a 55....I'd like to have an internal.

Thanks for your input Fiz.

Eheims can go either way - internal (in the sump) or external.

Eheim 1260 or 1250. 1260 if you're relying on the pump for most of the flow in the tank. 1250 is you have other circulation.

Eheims are nice submersible pumps. I also like Mags.

I am putting a 55 gallon tub tank inbetween the living room and sun room and my primary gaol is for it to be cool and quiet. I am not running a skimmer, just a fuge. I will be using 3-36" VHO's and the only other things i want to plug in is my return pump, fans, and heater. No powerheads, no skimmer, no nothing else. So what is the absolute quietest return pump I could possible get. I already have a 125 that is nice and noisy and hot in a spare room so this is just a second tank just too look nice in the living room.

Thanks

Nick
