View Full Version : Fluidized Filter for Rowa Phos?

I'm looking for feedback from anyone using a fluidized bed filter with Rowa Phos. Specifically, what brand/model and your success level with running this media in the filter.

I've seen reference to Deltec FR509 but it doesn't seem to be readily available (I haven't looked too hard yet).

I have about 800 gallons total capacity. My original plan was to run several phosphate reactors strung together but after getting them decided I'd much prefer to have a single unit if possible.

TIA

Hi,
I use the MyReef FMC-24 (it is a big unit) on my system and I am quite happy with it.

Hey Sean,

Are you running carbon AND some sort of phosphate media in there?

If so, was wondering how much of each you run, and how often you change it out.

Cheers,

Hey CW,
I only run the PO4 media.
I recommend that people only run this and not add carbon with it.
The reason is that carbons usefulness is used up much more quickly.

SeanT,

Thanks for the response. I was not familiar with that unit. It looks ideal. What level of success have you had at keeping the media in the chamber (i.e. do the pads do a decent job?)?

Also, what are you driving the flow with?

It works great.
I use a MJ 1200 for flow.
If you rinse the media well you will not have any problems.

I just remembered this thread.
Correct ROWAphos usage per David Saxby's advice. (http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=500727)

I have used it with my Precision Marine one and it worked fine. I don't use Rowa anymore though. Most don't use the PM but I find the quality to be excellent compared.

Thanks guys, very helpful. Any other opinions out there?

Thanks Sean, the different depletion rates was exactly what I was wondering about.

Sean,
Could you explain this statement a little more? I use 2 of the same units you use; one filled with carbon that then goes into one with Rowa. My thought process is that the carbon binds organics that the phosphate might bind unintentionally. Since carbon is much cheaper, I'd rather use it to do its job, and allow the Rowa to work on the phosphate.

Thanks!

I do the same. I run (2) TLF 150 in series
MJ400->valve->TLF1 (carbon)->TLF2 (Rowa)->output

Ixthys,
What I am saying is that I do not feel it is the best move to mix the two medias together in the same reactor.

Hey Norm,

I have been using the FR509 and Rowa for about 2 years now.
If you would like any of the FR models you need to contact Doug (1diverdown) @ Deltecusa.us (http://www.deltecusa.us/) You cant buy these @ PA or MD...
I do like the Deltec products but they are not cheap to buy by any means. Worth it? You decide...
I'm not sure if the FR509 would be big enough for your system but I will say that IME 250ML of ROWA easily handels my 100g system. Also I do know that the FR509 will hold more than 1L of Rowa. So I think a full FR509 could probably do a 600g water system with out much problems. But I dont know it would leave much head room for error. Probably just depends on how high your P04 is to start with... Or how low you want it.
The next model up is the 3L FR616 @ over $700.

In my most recent experience with ROWA, When resetting up my 90g I cooked and cycled the rocks in the tank. When the cycle was complete I measured the P04 @ > .14 with my Deltec (Merck) test kit. I added the FR509 with 250ML of ROWA then left town for 3 days. It tested @ <.008 when I returned.

Also, If I remember right, GEO made some Fluidized Reactors for someone...

I have the 509 in use on a 600 gallon system with 0 phosphates for a little over a year. I would imagine that it would work fine on an 800 gallon sytem as I only fill the 509 up about half way. That is about 2.5kg per fill (rowaphos). A bit pricely but I think well worth it. I have only had to change the media at 3 months and now have been running for 9 months without needing a change. Good luck with whatever you decide.

SeanT- I get ya. Thanks for clarifying.
