Got this oxypora from liveaquaria.com, and when it arrived it had a section along one edge that looked damaged, with brown strands of what I figured was dead coral tissue hanging off of it.

I just thought I ought to run it by someone to make sure it's not a disease, as it hasn't gotten any better but doesn't appear to have gotten any worse.

IMO that looks like an algae growing on the coral..almost like a cyano from the pic.. i would try removing it..

I did, actually, remove as much of it as I could before I placed it in the tank. So actually, I now have to say that yes, it has indeed spread a bit. Note that it is bare skeleton lying under the "gunk". Anyone else have any input? If it continues to spread I believe I'll frag off those portions and see what happens.

just watch it to see if it spreads. i've put some pretty bad lookiing echinos and oxys in my tank only to turn around and recover in a months time. they are pretty tough.
