I have been running a 175w XM 10k for 6 months on a magnetic ballast and am starting to wonder whether it has reached the end of it's useful life.

The colors of my corals have faded recently and I'm starting to suspect the bulb. It doesn't appear to have turned yellow or dimmed, but I really have no point of comparison?

Usually from my experience with the halides is they will loose there intensity but the coloration is still there. Unlike PC's or VHO where you can tell that they are on there last leg, halides dont have those signs of wear.
Usually depending on how long you have them on for will determine when to replace them. Usually for a bulb that is lit for anywhere between 8 to 12 hours a day I would replace them every 8 to 12 months. In your case the bulb might of had a shorter life span for some other reason.
