View Full Version : banggai cardinalfish is not looking good

my banggai cardinalfish has a white mass on its side! it is slimy looking. i think it is a fungus. i have had him for over a year. what can i do for him? i don't think I can catch him.

Fungus is relatively rare in SW because it prefers an acidic environment (and our tanks are alkaline). A "white mass" could be a number of things, including a serious bacterial infection, lymphocystis, or a larger tumor. A pic would definitely help.

possibly a bacterial issue..lucky typically they can appear on the eyes like mine did..lost the eye.

i'm guessing the only real effective treatment would be to treat in hosp tank with a antibiotic.

my hospital tank is not ready for a fish yet :(

It's a great pic. On that fish, I agree it could be bacterial. It' doesn't look very invasive yet. Is this a new tank? Are there any water quality issues? May be able to improve on that and help him fight it. It looks so superficial right now.

it is a 2 year old tank and i am not having any water problems. he does like to hang around my seabay anemone. he hits the tentacles some times could this be the reason?
