View Full Version : In-Wall Pictures, anyone?

My Wife and I are trying to figure out how to frame in our tank. I need some help deciding what looks cool and different. I've seen some cool in-wall setups, however I wanted to start a thread that people could get some really creative ideas thru some pictures.
Here is a front view of NexDog's awesome Japan.reef, just to get an idea of framing that I'm talking about.

Here is (was) my 240 Gal... I am currently rebuilding the entire system, I demolished all the drywall down to the floor. The new design has dry-stack stone around the base, an oak ledge and the top cap will be the same dry-stack stone trimmed off with oak crown moulding. I will have to take pics... Just finished staining the oak, will be applying the clear coat this weekend followed by the stone by next weekend.

Here is my onld tank.

I really like being able to access the tank from the front and back so I went with the doors.
Hope it helps,

It's all about the door panels...simple, easy to use, just cut and paste. ;)

Okay, maybe not that simple...

I haven't gotten to this step but I plan on framing my 215 in wall with brushed aluminum.

Crown molding looks nice but I want something different, more sleek and sharp.

This will also match the plasma TV that will be hanging next to it.

I hope it turns out as good as it sounds.

ktkreegs,

I really like the texture stone adds, I just picked up the cultured stone over the lunch hour... infact the color is some what similar to the photo from ATMs gallery. The rock I am using is Eldorado Stone "Nantucket stack stone".

I tried searching the internet looking for photos of other tanks using rockwork around the base, thats the only one I found.

BJJ
02/07/2006, 05:15 PM
Forgot to mention, I would recomend using a form of stone veneer apposed to using real stone for 2 reasons

lighter in weight about 75% lighter than stone

Way cheaper and easier to install. You can use std PL400 construction adheasive using a caulking gun. any cheap miter saw will cut the stone (you will have to buy a $6 masonary blade)

Here are the two major mfgs of cultured stone.

Funny you guys posted a pic of that ATM tank. I was the subcontactor who installed it. Its in a dentist waiting room in west Las Vegas. I didn't do any of the outside rockwork, just the aquarium install. I think that they put up a wood frame and built the rock up inside the frame by stacking it and using cement or some other adheasive to glue it to the wall.

BJJ...can you keep me posted as you go thru your process of installing your stone look. Take a bunch of pictures. I'm going to go and try and find some more information about that look as well. I can't wait to get this project going.

Gwalker...did you frame the tank in, or did you just do the actual stand, lighting and equipment room?

Any details of what you did would be appreciated. Thanks

No problem, I plan on installing the stone this weekend, I will take some pics as well as let you know what my experience was working with cultured stone. From what people have said, installing cultured stone is quite easy.

That second link you posted did not go show up. http://www.culturedstone.com/

Also, the other website was very interesting. No prices though? I'm trying to figure out what it would cost to do something similar to that picture with the stone.

BJJ
02/08/2006, 01:31 PM
worked for me...

As far as the cost, I paid about $6.35 CAD sqft for the Eldorado stone, I was told the Culture Stone would be just over a $1 more/sqft.

Stone comes in boxes, each box contains 10-11 sqft.
Corner stones are boxed based on 8 lin ft.

Stone is purchased by the box load meaning if you need 45sq ft you will have to purchase 50 sq ft or 5 boxes. Still WAY cheaper than real rock. The average thickness for the stone is 3/4" to 1.5".

Based on the picture you could probably do somthing like that with 1-2 boxes (between $70 and $140 CAD) plus glue or morter/thinset.

For my tank the rock cost me $350 total. Thats to cover the entire base and do an inlay on the top cap.

This is my in progress design. The opening above the tank will be enclosed with custom bi-fold plantation shutters. Still need to trim out around the tank but you get the basic idea.

Something to think about. I didn't read the whole thread so if someone already mentioned this , sorry. I would recommend having somekind of front access. A few of the pics didn't appear to have any entry from the front of the tank. I had a 180 in the wall and started with no front access and after fighting everything from the back, I finally redid the wall above the tank and added a large door. Just my .02.

Front access is impotantot have and can be done tastefully :)

I got the idea for my tank from a tank using plantation shutters in Denmark (I love Danish furniture and decor). The look is clean and practical because it allows access to the front of the tank.

I have The House of Blinds coming ot measure on the 14th for bifold plantation shutters for the openings above my tank. Some of the European designs are functional as well as fashionable:rollface:

Do you know why he did not use the wall plates?

It came down to a matter of money and design I think. That aquarium is actually pretty state of the art as far as components go. He is using a Bubble King 300 internal skimmer, had to buy a 1/2 HP chiller, I think he has 4 Darts on closed loops, running Zeovit, ect......

The wall plates did not fit into what he was going for in this tank. He has a rare angel passion (see interruptus in pic) so he wanted an open aquascape. The tank is 44 or 48 inches wide and 60 long. He has a Joculator angel on the way as well ($$$).

My approach to my aquarium is different than his. My goal is to create a turbuent reef crest with reef walls so to speak. The wall plates add a large surface area to accomplish this. When I thought of first using them I envisioned whorling montipora colonies, encrusting montipora, echinopora, and some acropora (possibly tables) attached to this area. In reality I may use the wide channels between the reef walls and the islands to create opposing table top pass throughs. The Ceramic Islands will be used for mounting corals such as solitarynesis, efflorescence, hyancinths, clathrata, kimbenesis, and jaquelanesis corals. The listed corals happen to all be table top acropora as well. SInce these are the most abundant corals in this type of environment I thought I would make sure they are represented. I may do a few stag type corals in the aquarium and a few cluster but the real focus is a table top reef.

In terms of a fish population I am thinking along the lines of a group of 3 geniicanthus angel fish, a pair of clowns, my royal gramma, and maybe a group of anthias or some other schooling fish. I done want to over crowd the tank though :)

Hey guys,

This is Nick, i am the owner of this tank,

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f283/ktkreegs/ceramicrock.jpg

Mike is right why i did not use the wall plates. They did not fit into this tank. Now i am not saying i will not use them in the future on a different tank as they are a nice feature. They just do not fit into the design of this tank. I am taking new pics this weekend, and will post a new updated pic as the one above is about 2 months old.

That is basically the only reason i did not want to use them. Like Mike said i like my fish espically rare angels, but i also like my corals. That's one of the reasons i wanted to keep it open. I love SPS corals and wanted to have room for them to grow in. here's a sneak peak of my angel fish passion....

Mine is no where near being finished but I put the trim on a couple days ago.

I was going to go with traditional wood molding but I chose to go with aluminum. I think it looks more sleek and modern. Also, it matches my TV.:)

The duct tape is removed now. It was just holding the trim up while the silicone dried.

TCU - I was considering a inwall tank next to a flat screen tv too, but have been afraid that the light of the tank and in the same line of sight would be a distraction or interfer with viewing the tv. How have you found this set-up in that regard?

I don't really think the tank lights will distract much from the TV (my attention will mostly be on the tank).

If it does interfere with TV viewing, we'll just wear shades.:)

I keep talken to the wife about letting me go in wall but she will never let it happen. The office is the bedroom I want as a fish room. I have a choice fish room or her. We have alot of love in our house for fish. She keeps asken me to downgrade to a smaller tank.

TCU....love the look of the tank next to the wall tv. However, the tank makes the tv look a lot smaller now.

I could care less. I'll be staring at the tank most of the time anyways.:)

dgasmd-Your tank is incredible!

The design elemts you incorporated in the stone really make it a part of your house...and not just a tank!

Its amazing--to me--how much better tanks look when energy is put into what surounds them and not just what is in them!

:D

Great Job!! :D
