View Full Version : Small Anglers that don't eat inverts?

Are there small anglers out there that don't eat invertibrates? I want to keep one in my 82 gallon, one of those 3.5" wartskin anglers. Are these the smallest, and if so do they eat inverts and such or just small fish?

thanks!

Warties and the like will eat shrimps. I don't thinik they normally will eat snails, hermits, or emeralds.

Randall frogfish and the tuberculated frogfish are probably the smallest. Not commonly seen, but New Alameda Aquatics had a few of the tuberosus in last year.

I think the dwarf anglers will go for shrimp as well.

Atlantis has a very cool hairy black striatus right now :) Uncommon color for striatus. Website shows it on hold. You might check with them if you're into it. I'd go for it, but don't have tank space.

If they only eat shrimp and not my other critters, I may consider getting one for my 82g ;) The more I research them, the more I like them. They're so weird looking, and unique. No more "Hey Mom, he has a nemo in his tank!" whenever little kids come over... it'll be "holy cow, some rock just ate the nemo!" well hopefully not a clownfish, but a frozen food piece... =)

I'll checkout the randall and tuberculated.

I was thinking about the leaf scorpionfish that's also really small...

My angler never botherd my snails or hermits. Im not to sure about shrimps though. My sawgassum would stalk my puffer pretty funny to watch.

The tuberculated looks like a hunk of lung cancer :)

Uberfugu has a few. He posted pics somewhere here a while back.

Take a look at the pop-eyed wasp fish on the atlantis site. Another cool ugly fish :) I sorta want to get that one, myself.

Go surf the angler forum on grimreefers, if you haven't yet. Lot's of good stuff there. (If you're bored, check out their totally non-pc off topic forum. One of the best, hehe.)

Either of the dwarf anglers would tend to get lost in an 82 though. Those anglers are more shy than others.

Btw, check out the new rhinopias at New Alameda Aquatics. Another unusual fish. Decent price too.

My wartskin is not shy at all. Always in front of the rockwork.

He sucked up a hermit once, not sure if he swallowed or not as he tried to spit it back out. I've had a cleaner shrimp with him for a while now and the cleaner is smart enough to stay away from it's mouth.

Also he'll try to eat fish even bigger than himself and die in the process. They have big mouths but they can't really defend themselves if a fish decides to pick on it.

will the dwarf anglers eat ocellaris clownfish? I'm guessing they would...

As a general rule of thumb, any type of angler may attempt to eat any fish or shrimp up to about twice its own size. When it eats anything more than about half its own size however, the life of the angler may be at risk due to its very slow digestive system. I don't know why they haven't evolved to the point of being smarter about what they try to ingest....but they haven't.

Even if the clownfish are more than twice the angler's size, if the clownfish are hosting in an anemone, that isn't a good tank for an angler. As an ambush predator, they like to perch on things and wait...and I doubt perching on an anemone would be a good idea for the frogfish. I've never heard of them being immune to anemone stings, though their skin is surprisingly tough.

that's interesting.

I may setup an inline tank just to hold an angler to my 180g+ system.

I have a small wartskin angler

what kind of shrimp?

an angler should leave hermits and snails alone, but shrimp are not safe, and fish under 2X the length of the angler are not safe.

i can get pygmy anglers that only get 3". They will eat small shrimp (like ghost shrimp). They are really cool, some are bright red and some are marbled colored. i forget the species off the top of my head... maybe Antennatus tuberosus ???

they are rare in Hawaii, but i've seen more lately.

i think they would be my only choice for an angler with shrimp.

Randall and Tuberosus are the Hawaiian dwarf anglers. Tuberosus has a marbled pattern.

Koden, check out the 2 tuberosus here:

http://www.grimreefers.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5678

The second one came from Steve at NAA. I missed out on it. I saw it in the store, but it was hiding inside some pvc. It was mis-ID'd as multiocellatus or something, so I passed on it :(

Wow, just looked at the picture. the orange colored one is SOOOO amazing! I really want to get one now. It seems they're really hard to get =X

I'll get my system setup, put together the small angler tank, and start looking.

Dwarf angler might be doable in a 10, but you should really stay on top of the water quality. Supposed to do best with reef quality water... especially regarding nitrates.

Kinetic

hey norman,
it will be hooked up to my 82g's system (30g refugium, 50g sump, 30g prop tank, 82g display, ASM G3 skimmer w/ recirc, RDSB, etc etc.) so it won't be a problem. my display will only have about 5 fish total as well =) I'll keep it in the small tank just so I can keep an eye out and feed him that way.

My LFS here in Hawaii had 5 of the Tuberosus frogs the other week. 1 mated pair and 3 singles. They are very cool. 2 of them were BRIGHT red. the others were the cancer looking ones.. lol they are just as neat. :)
