View Full Version : Show Off Your Fish Only And Aggressive Tanks
lessans

I haven't seen a thread for fish only and aggressive tanks yet in this forum, so I figure why not start one. I don't know anyone in my area with an aggressive tank so I don't have the luxury of hanging out with a person and getting to look at their tank. On that note make the tanks come to those who view this thread by POSTING YOUR FISH ONLY AND AGGRESSIVE TANKS :D.

That is a nice FO tank you got. Very clean I must say. How do you keep the substrate so white?

First, Thank you!
The sand is Estes Marine Sand. It just stays white on it's own. I don't do anything to it.
The Hermit Crab is called a Common or Starry Hermit Crab. They get about 4 inches across. Mine is about as big as a baseball. He cleans up after the Trigger and Eel.

Me too! can you tell up what type of filtration you have.
Do you have BB or sand? (can't tell from the pics), If it's sand, looks like a very thin layer.

If you're constantly reading the Fish Only and Aggressive Tanks forum then you probably have one of the two kinds of tanks. So post them. Looking at pictures is probably what half of RC members do most of the time.

Actually, not all of us have a FO or Aggressive tank....but I am reading, reading, reading everything I can find before I start mine!!:D
I have a75g sitting empty, but I really want a black dog-faced puffer, and they need ALOT bigger tank....so until I get it, I am just reading, and looking at these awesome pics!!
Thanks for requesting this thread....very curious to see what poeple have!

Yes and yes. It ate a lionfish and toby puffer. That prompted me to go with real mean tankmates. Louti groupers are very mean, and the dottyback is quite tough as well.

here is a new pic of the sump room:
two 100g rubbermaid sumps. Return pump is in between the two. One sump is used primarily to run the kalk reactor top-off and skimmer off of, while the other serves as a refugium.

quarantine/hospital tank is on the right of the picture. I had always wanted to keep some corals, so I threw an extra CPR sump that I had into the 100g rubbermaid sump and put it on its own circulating loop with a 250 watt MH hung over it.
In that little tank I have xenia, a gigas, maxima, crocea, and squamosa clam.....and several other corals (anthelia, candycanes, hammers, star polyps, etc)
All the corals, especially the xenia are growing like mad.....I have the xenia primarily for nutrient absorbtion and the clams to act as a natural filter

As long as it behaves itself and doesn't grow out of control I let it stay, along with the Halimeda macro that's grown out of the rocks. You have some really awesome fish and a nice tank system. Me personally, I would loose the artificially coloured coral. It just looks too unnatural and detracts from the wonderful calideoscope of colours your fish already have.

Great tanks all! I am in the process of setting up a 150 gallon FOWLR and was wondering how you guys keep everything clean with no "cleanup crew". I want Triggers and Wrasses too. Danorth, that Coris is awesome. Do you guys recommend a deepsand bed, or shallow? I get caught up in the reef threads, and am so glad to see shots of setups this great.
whatcaneyedo
06/11/2006, 12:19 PM
No clean up crew? I've got turbo, astrea, magareta and nassarious snails (sorry not in the mood to check the spelling on those) many tiny red and white brittle stars plus one huge green one as well as a pincushion urchin a tiger tail cucumber and a lonely little hermit crab that came on a rock that neither my eel nor my lion has noticed plus those stomatella snails which were also hitch hikers.
I also use an ASM G3 skimmer on my system plus a 20 gal fuge which has a 4" deep mud bed, one of those mag floats to keep the front glass clear and 10% weekly water changes. The main tank has a 1" sand bed.
I guess its because I dont have any triggers or puffers that I am able to keep a few more cleaners than some of these other tanks.

I went snorkeling in the Red Sea last summer and the Sergeant Majors were friendly to me. I was able to swim within 5 feet of them. Yeah, I'm a sneaky bastage! The only fish I can think of that is home in a small tank is an undulate. Experiment is a side by side refugium (which mine isn't, but I will try to get close) where I don't have to change water or skim. Feeding also changed to once every 3rd day vs. 3x Every day! Has real ocean sand that I hauled in and had a variety of plants, but the undulate buried them. Ahhhh undys! So far so good. The care free tank!

plankton,
I have a 40gal Rubbermaid tub that I use to QT.....I have some rock in it, a heater, a Fluval 304, and a powerhead for water movement. I usually QT for about 3 weeks to a month. I just check for the usual - ich, pop-eye, tattered fins, red around the gills, and treat accordingly. As for this Passer Angel, I didn't have to treat for anything....she came in very good shape....took her about a week to start eating though......
Hope this helped answer your question.

well to me. if it makes any sense. They swim like snakes so the bodily motion (or S motion) pushes water propeling them forward. Uhh its hard to explain. I don't know if this is right but only a guess. Its like when you fold your arm out and move it like a snake under water and how it moves water that would propel you forward. Geez this is probably confusing. oh well

Thanks Duc!!! I want an IMP now too. This BF is awsome, but I've had it for a long time now, and it really needs a bigger home soon!!! Come out to Cali and I'll give you a steal on mine (cause I know its going to a good home) ;) and I can go out and get an IMP
BTW, I went to a sweet shop in Tokyo today. Its called PauPau. They had a sweet IMP for the bagin price of........................ $500 US dollars!!!
I mean, it was a sweet IMP (nothing I couldn't get in San Fran for $150), but a little pricey.....
But they also had the biggest lion fish I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!! It was 16"!!!!!!!! And they only wanted $75 US dollars  I guess they must be a dime a dozen here ;)

I know i'm kind limited with size here but my question is this. I have a 40g reef tank that I want to turn into a FOWLR tank. My question is which kind of fish do you guys recommend and how many fish can I keep in a small tank like that? I'm really interested in turning it into one. Another thing is that I have a brand new 60g tank, still in it's plastic cover. I can also just upgrade that 40 to that 60 for more space. What do you guys think?

When I had the CT, I was running a mainly aggressive FO tank with a wet/dry and a big skimmer. I had that clown trigger for about a year, but I wanted to switch to all LR and get an extensive clean up crew, so I sold it to a local here in Sac, so the CT wouldn't scarf all my snails and hermits. Wonderful fish, and never showed any signs of over aggressive behavior while it was in my possession.
The PBT I bought after the CT was gone, and I felt my system was ready to house the fish. I had had for about a year too, but it grew so fast, and became very belligerent. I fed it all the time. After about a year, all it would do is chase its reflection up and down the tank. It also began to harass my BF angel. I traded that fish into a LFS for some credit. It was a great fish, but IMHO, a 125 was just too small for the fish.
Here is a pic of the PBT pre- uber aggressiveness
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m199/jimdogg187/zebra2.jpg
Wonderful fish IMO. Just needs more tank than I could offer :( I also sold off the the miniatus in that pic before I moved my system to its new location.

Hi, Lisa,
I don't have a copy of Reef Fishes, but I did find the article in Reefkeeping on Scorpionfish has some photos of the same species. There are a couple different colors, apparently. I know there are quite a few species of this fish and that they can be difficult to ID.
Thanks for the help!

My guess is M&F. They look different, however I don't know how to determine. I think the biggest one is male and the smaller is Female. They never fought at all. They school together everywhere. It's really a nice thing to watch them swimming together.

First and foremost, they get butt ugly as adults and 27" long. Not many tanks are large enough for a full grown panther plus it will eat anything that fits in it's mouth, including most tankmates.

I like the juv. look. Ill have to research what the adult looks like. If it changes so much and looks ugly, to me it would sure seem to be a shame to get one and get attached to the look and have it change on you. Oh well i guess it couldnt hurt to research it.

Can you tell me how you have the 3 groupers in the tank and they dont fight? I had a minatus and a Blue spot one time and they would constantly fight it out. It was like a race in the tank at all times. the tank was a 150 also so by no means small. Both were about 6" long. So is it that as they get larger they are more lethargic?
Thanks

No, not the puffer. They were talking about the panther grouper. When they get big, their heads stay small, that's why a lot of people say they look ugly.

If you look on the second page of this thread theres a picture of my tank from 3 years ago... one move and about $5000 in upgrades and its looking a lot nicer these days.
I've had my snowflake for about 4 years and hes just over 2' long. I wish I could post a picture of him completely out of the rocks to show off his full size but he rarely comes out entirely.

Cooli - I'm surprised you can keep the mandarin with the snowflake eel.

Cooli - I'm surprised you can keep the mandarin with the snowflake eel.
I have a breeding pair of mandarins in my tank. The eel and the mandarins have been living in harmony for over 6 months now. Before introducing the mandarins, I researched their compatibility and discovered that the mandarins are poisonous (thus the vibrant colours) and the Snowflake eel is aware of this, thus not giving the mandarins a second glance.
