Are rubber bands non-toxic?

I have heard of people using rubber bands to attach softy frags to rocks. Are rubber bands safe to use long term? I would like to rubber band a screen around the intake of my seio pump to prevent stuff from clogging the slots but want to make sure they are non-toxic. Are all rubber bands made of the same material? I did a search and didn't get any results on this topic.

I expect most are fine. They will get brittle over time, however. :)

I heard that they will get broken down by bacteria over time. With no side effects.
