Suggestions on placement/experience for bulkheads without an overflow would be most appreciated.

Is the drain going to lead to a closed loop, sump or ?

A sump gary...i've seen pics of displays with just bulkheads, but they appeared quite a ways down in the display (like several inches). Not sure how people are running them. I'm trying to minimize "things" in the display, and it will be lps dominate, so i'm not to worried about surface skimming all that much.

You can place the bulkhead for your drain on the side glass or bottom of your aquarium (provided it's not tempered) but you'll want to make sure that the overflow goes to the surface of the water- not only for surface skimming, but in case of a power outage.
