Look what Dan helped me do! It is nearly 5 feet tall now! It has only been running for a few hours but the bubbles are like shaving cream. I am running a reef dart on it full throttle.

I think you need to go taller for a longer dwell time Bob! Jk.

Goodness, how are you going to clean that thing? Stick a mop in there?

Jeff Foxworthy could have a hay day with this one....

If your skimmer is taller than the average american male....
Yooooouuuu might be a reef geek.

If you need a ladder to take the collection cup off your skimmer...
Yooooouuuu might be a reef geek.

If your skimmer can no longer be identified as a possible bong because it is just too damn big....
Yoooooouuu might be a reef geek.

Ive had a bong longer than that.........

Funny!

I did forget to publicly Thank Dan for helping me do this. He did in a few hours what would have taken me weeks to figure out!

Thanks Dan!

It has only been running for a few hours and I am still working on getting it adjusted. I now have foam about halfway up the extension tube.....that means about 1 1/2 feet up :). I'm sure it will have quite a break in period as we had to use some oil and it was a new tube and such. I cleaned it all really good but it is still basically new. I will post a pic of what it produces!

It has some condensation inside the tubes. It did the same thing when I first got it. Just needs time.

If it starts producing let us know. There's nothing like having the wife get upset over the smell of the skimmate. I know I've never been more proud to be a reefer.

Is it pulling anything out yet Bob?

Bullet
02/19/2006, 08:33 AM
ohh yeah, it is working pretty good. I had to take out the extension tube for now because I need a bigger pump. But even with just the beckets extended it is working a lot better. It seems to be getting more skimmate and darker, even if I try to skim wet it is still dark. I guess I am pulling out 5-6 cups of really dark skimmate every 4 days. Can't wait till I get the pump I need for it!

What pump are you going to get for it?

Bullet
02/19/2006, 09:05 AM
I don't know. I cannot find anyone that has done this. I dont want to buy one and not have it work right. It has to be pressure rated, but then you are looking at tons of $$$ and alot of watts :(. I am guessing I am going to need something like this:

Saw this last night and I finally found it again. HOC is selling his ampmaster 6000 for $200 shipped.

Bullet

yeah, there has to be a better pump out there that is pressure rated up to ~6000 gph's and uses less power than that one!

This pump worked great through an OM 4-way. It then powered my quad beckett skimmer before I moved on to Deltec. Great pump for a larger tank.

This is what HOC has posted. I think if it can run 4 becketts it would have to have enough pressure to run your skimmer! I don't know a ton about that stuff but I know in order to run 4 becketts it takes a lot of power!

Otherwise talk to the guys over on the DIY forum there are tons of people there that make their own skimmers and I'm sure someone could set you up with a good pump. Maybe send SPAZZ a pm. He seems to be really big into that stuff.

Maybe check out the Iwaki 70 rlt or 100rlt. I believe both of them are pressure rated. The 100rlt is about the same price as the Manta Ray but takes half the power!

I would just get "this" (http://www.deltecusa.us/proteinskimmers/ap851.php) pump :)

I thought the 1260 was only rated @ 637 gal/hr whereas my 1060 is rated @ 602 gal/hr.

Great pump, seems to last forever but I don't think it's overly powerful.

Hey Bob check MRC's website. You basically turned your MR-3 into an MR-7 so something around SEQ 3200 our something in that nieghborhood would work. When in doubt call Andy at MRC.
BTW NICE!

mwood
02/19/2006, 04:38 PM
You could always get a Sequence or a Dolphin. Can't go wrong with 3000+ gph.

Bullet
02/19/2006, 07:04 PM
I have dart w/ 3600 gph's on it now and it not enough with the extension. Plus it is not pressure rated. I talked to Andy and he gave me a few suggestions but he did not really seem to know what to get for sure. I posted on the MRC Club thread and nobody responded :(. I was hoping to get a response from someone that has done the same thing.

Ampmaster has some 6000+ gph pumps that are pressure rated. I'll try to find them.

It looks like you got lost in the suffle in the MRC Culb thread. Like I said I would go with a "1000" series Sequence pump. There suggested for the larger MRC's and they generally will save you a bundle in operating cost over a similar sized Iwaki.

I like the plumbing job you kept all the turns nice and smooth.

Bullet

No, I still have not figured out which pump to get for it. I have been running it without the extension and it has been working great just with the extended becketts.

I had an idea while I was at work tonight. What size plumbing do you have feeding the Dart and what size exiting?

From what I've read on the Dart pumps you HAVE TO HAVE a 2" line feeding that pump and a 1.5" exiting or multiple smaller outlets. If not the pump will be too restricted and will not have enough power!

Just an idea I had, not sure if it will help or not. If that don't work we have some 1200 gpm pumps at work but you'd have to figure out some way to hook the hydrolics up to them to make them work! 1200 gpm = :eek1: GPH :D

Yea, I worked at the DSM Airport last summer fueling the airlines and cargo. Our trucks pumped upwards of 600-800 gpm. Lets just say it takes for ever to fill your car after work.

I'm thinking of making my own skimmer. But I got no skills! Girls like guys who have skills!

I am pretty good with a bo staff though!

I'd love to have a meeting where we all get together agree on a plan and have a DIY meeting :P

Making a skimmer isn't that bad. Just oversize the pump and reaction chamber. Also make sure to add a gate valve.
