Cool! What are your plans for the tank? What kind of equipment?

KingSpade
02/10/2006, 08:51 PM
planning a reef, with a few fish like a Sohal tang, achilles tang, couple gobies, and maybe some green chromis. ordering next friday: coralife 3x 150 watt HQI lights (aqualight pro 72") 4 seio M1500 powerheads, ASM G3 skimmer, about 300 pounds of araglive bahama oolite sand. i am also going to run a 55 gallon sump/refugium. i cant wait to get this fired up. ill keep posting updates

looks good, but I would nix either the sohol or the achilles or both from a 125

KingSpade
02/11/2006, 07:20 PM
i think ill be alright with those 2 tangs, ive never heard anywhere that a 125 is too small especially the achilles

The Reefer91
02/11/2006, 08:06 PM
i'm going with a Achilles, hippo, and yellow tangs in a 125g. i'll also be having s 55g sump and 10g refugium. i'll be mixing them all at once so there won't be any agrresion btween them(in theory)

yoboyjdizz
02/11/2006, 09:08 PM
achilles might do ok in a 125 gallon but a sohal espically with any other tangs in there or other food compeitors in there, might be the last fish standing and it gets way to big. I would probably look at different tangs achillles is not an easy fish to care for...

If I may make a suggestion, consider the same fixture with the 250w HQI bulbs. My buddy has a 125 with the 150watters and it isn't as bright as I would like. And if you ever upgrade to a 180 or 210, the 250s might be a better fit.

Other then that, the tank, durso's, and sump look great. keep up the good work and ignore the naysayers...

hello, did some plumbing yesterday, not 100% done since i only have 1 bulkhead to use for mock up but this will give the general idea of how its going to drain. i cant run my sump under the stand because my skimmer is too tall, so what you see is a ball valve to make a slower drain into the sump, and 2 open drains running into the skimmer bay. the last pic is of my DIY return pipe. i am going to do my return lines with 3/4" acrylic flex tubing. and will be using a mag 18 for a return. let me know how i did on this project. thanx- Tony

Honestly, I'm a bit concerned with the strength of your stand. I'm no expert (GOD KNOWS!!!), but based on the views of it, it doesnt appear that it's going to hold that tank filled.

Can you post some more detailed pics of it?

should i keep alll that coraline on the overflows or should i scrape it all off?

cabbagehead
02/18/2006, 02:37 PM
I would give the overflows a nice vinegar bath. The coraline will probably turn white and begin to flake off. I did not clean off my powerheads when I went to a 135 from a 55 and I now wish that I had. You seem to be off to a great start. Do you have plans to cover the sump with anything? I would hate to see you get your tank established and have something (or someone) spill into your sump (Battlefield games can get intense).

02/19/2006, 01:03 AM
It's a bummer that the skimmer wont fit under the stand. Maybe you could pull out that warped bottom and put a piece of thicker plywood with an area cut out for your sump and just put the sump inside but on the floor.
Other than that it's looking good.

Ok, its up and running with a few bugs that need to be worked out, everything seems to work like its supposed to , i just have a couple noise issues that need to be dealt with. also my skimmer fills up wayyy too quick, but anyway just thought i would pose the pics for you all to see. if you think you can help me sort these noise issues out please dont hesitate to throw your 2 cents at me. thank you!!- Tony

Where are the noises comming from? What kind of noises? Also, your skimmer seems to be in really deep water. I think ASM's like the ER's need to be in about 8" of water. Maybe you could build a small stand out of egg crate or pvc for it.

KingSpade
02/23/2006, 11:03 AM
the noise is comming from the overflow on the right side, just a waterfall type of noise, the other noise is from the sump where the pipes drain by the skimmer, they are bubbling because the pipe is about 3/4" under the water level, can i just drill a couple little breather holes for those? i dont know what to do about the sound comming from the overflow. also the skimmer is in 8-9" of water and on the asm website they say they work best in 6-10" of water?

And is he your mentor on the wall:)

Nice setup and plumbing so far. I will first isolate each noise source and solve the worst then go to the next.

Most likely source: air in the drain pipe hitting the water in the sump; the skimmer pump; your return pump; water splash in the overflow...

i have Al Capone stuff all over my wall, i also have an original Atlanta Journal from 1934 with snipets of al capne when he was transferred to Alcatraz, that paper is worth quite a bit of maney as far as newspaper value goes.

I do not see any bubbles in the skimmer.

Return noise will only stop if you get them above the waterline.

Sometimes the overflows make a trickling noise when the water hugs the return pipe and creates a Pee stream into the overflow.

KingSpade
02/23/2006, 11:17 AM
i dont have the skimmer turned on because it fills too quickly. i think im going to test it again in a little bit here, and im gonna check the airline tube to see if it is still connected.

jacmyoung
02/23/2006, 11:19 AM
One way to reduce overflow spalsh noise is to raise the water level in the box. The only way to silence the drain outlet, other than by way of Al Capone, is a silent drain system. Since you have two overflow boxes, it may work out for you perfectly:

KindSpade,

What kind of tank is your 125? I am looking into 90g RRs and can only find ones with the box out along the back wall, not in the corner. Seems like the corner mode is way more out of the way and inconspicuous. Do you know why they put them out in the middle and where I can find one like yours?

KingSpade

it is an all glass aquarium. i think al the newer models have the "megaflows" which are bigger boxes along the back instead of in the corner.

Not to pry, but how much (ballpark) did that light system run you? I'm looking to upgrade, but am a little put off with the prices for MH. Also, with that much light, do you have to hook a chiller up to keep the heat down? (another put-off for MHs)

NCreefwannabe

those light systems would cost more than retrofit setup of the same type would cost.
You just dont get the housing and the mounting legs lol.
