I would like to encourage those interested in their SPS tanks to develop a network (nothing that organized) to swap "SPS" frags specifically but also any corals.

My reasoning is that when I started with my SPS tank John was very generous in helping me out with a tremendous number of frags. This allowed my tank to immewdiately be very enjoyable to me with little $ outlay. I have tried to do the same by trading, selling for low prices and even giving some of my SPS away to club members.

In addition I feel it is almost critical to the longevity of each of our tanks. Since SPS is so fragile and tank die-offs have effected so many of us, it is great insurance to spread the wealth so that you can get back some of the species that otherwise might be lost if we don't foster swapping, shareing etc.

My idea is to pair-up in groups of 3's or four and do mini trades. Ideally in each group at least two participants would have atleast 15 to 20 different colonies to frag from, while the remaining participants could have new tanks or be new to SPS. This way even those of us with a wider selection of SPS could gain some new species to add to their tanks.

I am all for selling frags, but this could be done for little or no cost.

So how about it. any thoughts

I'm just getting started, but I would be interested in initially buying frags from such a group and then trading later :D

Sounds great. I know that many of us on this thread have traded frags in order to hedge against a possible die-off. For instance, everytime I receive a colony, I frag off two pieces for bkbkid, and tagareef. This way, if my colony dies off, we still have some remaining pieces still living.

This is a great idea, in which I hope that more would utilize. I am glad that you posted this thread so more people would do this as well.

I really hope we can bring this idea to fruition. I think it would greatly benifit our hobby and our pocket books, lol.

This is a great idea - ecologically, financially, in terms of building a community ...

Lets make it happen.

Sounds like there is some interest. I will start to think of a way to set up some initial groups and parameters for the trading. Please let me know of your input.

1. groups of 3-4, 2 participants with more SPS and 1 or 2 with less SPS.
2. Novice SPS'ers might get to pick 5 frags from each tanks, while advanced might get to pick more if desired.
3. Tanks should be SPS Friendly - Lights, Flow, Correct H2O parameters.
4. Tanks should be disease free.
5. Groups could be paired geographically at first. or by what the participant is trading and want they are looking for. Possibly fill out a wish list form.

etc.

I am really excited about this project. I'd be happy just see peoples tanks also without the confines of a formal 'All of Colorado Club meeting'...

Also Jimmyhof, could you implement a system that allows people who are just starting out to 'buy into' into the group. My tank is just starting and I'd love to get some frags from the group, but I don't want to abuse the system by coming in late and getting free frags that people have worked hard to cultivate...

I'm out for 6 weeks or so (red bugs), but I'm still interested.

It sounds like a great way to get to know people close by. I still think we need a Boulder Chapter. :)

Great stuff guys but also be careful, a lot of you will get the same frags and it's always great to share. That's how I got most of my stuff, John also got me off to a great start. Unfortunately, you can also share red bugs, flat worm and etc. A while back, there were quite a few fighting the red bugs and it would suck to see that start up again. It would be one thing if we all quarantined but we don't. Just keep this in mind. ;)
