I need advice on any type of automatic feeder system for my 125 gallon reef tank. I'm gone every weekend for up to three days. Anyone out there have a recommendation on the best feeder money can buy?

I wouldnt worry about one honestly, fish can go 3 days no problem without food. Plus they will have plenty to graze upon in the tank for food.

My reef tank is only eight months old. Not much for them to graze on. It seems that if I go one day without feeding they go nuts feeding the next day.

You will have plenty of life within 8 months old. Fish will eat until they literally die, so them looking like they are always starving doent mean they are.

Thanks for your reply. I'm still interested in good automatic feeders. Any other ideas out there?

Blown 346, I just looked at your pictures. Who, I'm not even close. Still very new to this hobby. I wish I could get my tank further along. Looks great!

I use the Eheim autofeeder and love it. Extremely easy to program and can hold lots of dry food. I use it daily and I think I refill it every third week or so.

Flake food or something else?

I got my auto feeder from premium aquatics and I like it. When I set up my new tank I stopped using it though. I wanted to be carefull not to overfeed my tank. I only have 1 small purple tang, coral beauty, wrasse and a manderine in my 90. I am gone monday thru thursday most weeks and I only feed this tank on the weekends Nori, flake and some cyclopeez.. My fish are fine. I have very liittle algae but they seem healthy and not malnourished looking. I have VERY little neusance algae to none at all. When I ran my auto feeder I had a little bit of a problem with algae.

Now the thing that i like about the premium aquatics auto feeder is that there is several settings you can implement. I chose the 1x/day option but it can be twice (i think).. I think I paid 30 bux for it or something. Its an electric unit. This has no hopper and can hold a max of 2 weeks of food at 1/day feeding.

Good luck,
Chris

without a doubt, Eheim is the best. there are lots of China made copies out there now, but i prefer the original german made Eheim.

I've only used the Eheim autofeeder, so that's what I'll comment on. I went away for a 2 wk vacation one time, and had the Eheim feed my fish. I did have my friend check up on the tank every few days or so to make sure all is fine, but other than that all fish were alive and kicking when I came back. It's easy to program and works great for flake and small pellets. Mine was just sitting on top of my sump and the return pump would deliver the food to my tank.

Another vote for the Eheim. It works perfectly, can set multiple times per day for feeding and single or double dose of food.
The only time I ever had a "problem" is when I forgot to change the batteries.
