I do a 15gallon water change everyweek and siphon the tank during that time as well. I dose Kent Marine Tech CB 2-part additive. That is about it. I love the Deltec! Besides the lighting I think it was the best peice of equipment that I have purchased!

JeremyT- That is a "maze brain"

Tusken- Because of the fact that the tank bottom was painted black and because of the angle of the shot. The bottom didn't show in the shot. I will get some more pics for you to show the bottom of the tank. :)

I'm thinking of going BB also, It will be a FOWLR tank. Do you BB guys point your powerheads towards the bottom to stir up debris to the overflow? Also, how often do you siphon out the crap on the bottom? I have a 90g AGA.

You can point them towards the bottom if you like. I have one behind the rocks and two in the corners pointed towards the front center of the tank. I siphon it once every week when I do a water change.

Yup... Never had any problems with algae. I just wanted to try something new. I really like it. though. I do still admire the look of a SSB (DSB was never my thing). I will update with the ups and downs of having this BB. Thanks for your interest in my tank :)

If I go BB, will I still need a refugium? I'm ok with this, really! Do I have to do water changes more often? I currently do a change once a month at about 15%. Do you BB buys have less algae because of the BB? If so, that would be a major plus for me! Thanks for all the help. I plan on re-setting up my 90g soon.

143gadgets
02/14/2006, 09:39 PM
I removed my fuge, but there are some people whom have BBs and still keep fuges. I think it depends on how nutrient-free you want your tank. AS far as water changes, I am not really sure because I am new to this as well. I have always done a water change every week. I have noticed that I clean the glass less often than I did when I had a SSB. You might want to think about cooking your rocks as well. I didn't cook mine because they were three years old (purchased them from another reefer) and as you can see I had too much coraline to loose. Good luck and I hope this helps you on your journey to Bare-bottomness!

hulley
02/15/2006, 06:37 AM
I'm currently cooking my rocks now! I want to do it right this time, no short cuts!

143gadgets
02/15/2006, 08:20 AM
If you are going to go all the way barebottom. Then remove the fuge. just have a sump under your tank. From what I understand cheato likes to trap detritus and will cause an increase in nutrient levels if not cleaned often. I am not sure if this is totally correct. I am just giving you the advice that was given to me. Good luck and don't for get to post pics when you begin setting up the tank.

stan zemanek
02/15/2006, 01:11 PM
when i re-plumbed my tank i hooked in a fuge as you can see in the pic on the left hand side. i have not made it operational yet as i cannot seem to get trates even if i wanted to. the thing thats nice about barebottm is the cleaning just dust of your rocks with a turkey baster and suck it up, if you want to keep your water a little on the dirty for softies do less siphoning

I just think it's hilarious that all that was old is new again. When I first got in the hobby of reefs 1995 or there abouts, it was all about the BB.

Then news came out that tanks crashed after awhile because the BB couldn't mantain for some reason. Usher in the DSB. Then it was Algae scrubbers, then the DSB + fuge.

Lol, ah well, I like to tinker so it's all good to me :)

02/20/2006, 08:28 AM
I got out of the hobby back when DSB's were just coming into vogue, and I thought they were crazy then. Now that I'm getting back into the hobby it's nice to see that people have returned to their senses :)

I have to ask... BOILING your LIVE rock????????????????????????????

Cooking live rock is not boiling it. It means to put it in a dark tub for about 6 weeks doing weekly 100% water changes and scrubbing, dunking and swishing the rocks in a series of buckets between these water changes. It's sort of like recuring it. This process supposedly removes the phosphates and detritus from the rock. It's a good thing to do if you have a hair algae problem. I'm on week 4 with my rock. If you have heavy coralline coverage you may not lose it all. My biggest rock was covered in purple and still looks good even after a month in the dark. I wouldn't recommend doing this without having a RO/DI unit, because you have to make a crapload of saltwater and if your goal is to rid the rocks of phosphate, soaking them in tap water would be pointless IMO.

03/03/2006, 10:26 AM
I see. I don't think I will have any problems with the rock. I will be using a combo of lace rock, drilled and posed to perfection with already very alive live rock.
I'm visualizing a corkscrew rock stack that appears to levitate and float in the water.....all above a reflective bare bottom tank.

I will be documenting every step........I'm also going to incorperate a little of the "great stuff" foam. Ive done a couple of projects with this and have had success. 1 tank 3 year with the foam and all is well.

My only concern right now is wether or not to drill the back of the tank and add a corner overflow to a closed loop......I will not have a sump...........skimming is going to be an issue to decide on as well.

All is well in the BB world. The new wrasse has so much more color now than when I first got him. I am continuing to use Kent Marine 2-part until I get my kalk reactor and calcium reactor. I can see that the amount of detritus that the rock is shedding has decreased since I first started BB in this tank. I am going to try and get some interesting photos this weekend to show you guys!

I walked into this guy's LFS as a FOWLR. I was just looking into these CPR refugiums and lights and stuff. He looked at me and said, I will give you 3 months and I know you'll be doing reef.

I went like "Hell no, I can't afford that. I don't have a setup for that!"

I did some aquascaping and fragging last night. The corals and frags that were sprayed with reef glue accelerator RTN'd. I am pretty ****ED! I lost some nice stags, a blue milli, and a purple tipped valida.

Besides that, here is the lastest FTS!

Ey Chris, those frags definitely didn't come from your work. Awesome pictures, bro!! I haven't seen you in a while. Hope to catch you at Congressional one of these days. BTW, Gary's happy that you hooked him up with substrate. However, he hasn't setup his tank yet!!!!!!!!

I agree, you take some awesome pictures! Watch out, there are peeps at Congressional who work there that are saying you altered your pictures color wise. I don't know their names but one's a young newbie kid. I think they're just jealous. Gary saw your tank in person and it was insanely beautiful! Colors are just like how the pictures express.

PS: Have you always had your tunze's?? You are rich. :mixed:

I think they are jealous as well. I will be going back there this weekend, but I won't be there much longer. I have had the Tunzes for about a month and I LOVE them. The best thing about them is the flow and Multi controller. They are awesome.

I've been considering some Tunze 6000's w/controller for a 90g. But I was wondering if they might be too strong if I use a sand substrate. Do you think Tunze would work for you if you weren't BB? Thanks. Chip

oceanprincess- Thanks!

chip721- Thanks! I have one 6000 and one 6100. I will eb upgrading the 6000 to a 6100 in a couple of weeks. I think that you could do one or two 6000s if you get the multi controller. It will allow you to turn the Tunzes down a bit. What kind of corals are you going to keep?

05/30/2006, 09:09 PM
Chris, if I go with the Tunze, I'd definately get the controller too. My delima at this point (besides price) is whether or not I can do a DSB in a 90g with 2 Tunze 6000's (and controller). I hate to pay for a Tunze kit, put a DSB in place, only to have the streams create a constant sand storm. The tank will be primarily LPS and SPS.

If the streams will be too much, then maybe I'll have to go with my original plan: an Oceans Motions 4 way Super Squirt closed loop. I have some Seio's in my existing tanks right now. They're ok, but not my favorite or primary choice for flow. Thanks for your input.

Then news came out that tanks crashed after awhile because the BB couldn't mantain for some reason.

What a line of Bulls**t. BB tanks don't crash unless your husbandry is completely whack. DSB's crash.

Show me all these people with BB you say who have crashed!

Or were you just making up this fact to validate a reason to post?

You are no better, there is no evidence that DSB, SSB or BB have caused tanks to crash.

Just because a tank has one and crashed does not mean it was the cause. And considering that BB are relatively new, it is impossible to make a comparison.

I have read posts from plenty of people who have made the switch to BB and had reduced success, only to switch back to sand and have their tanks become better. I have also read people's experiences with sand having problems, making the switch and having more success with a BB.

It is all preference IMO.

You're just as bad as the poster who seemed to anger you. on that note.. take a chill pill.

I personally find BB to be totally unnatural looking. It makes the choice easy for me. As well as the hundreds of successful sand filled tanks I have seen lets me be confident in the face of some who seemingly live by BB.

Exactly. Great looking tank by the way ! :D

Can't everyone just accept the fact that BB and sand bed tanks of varying depths all can and do work. The key is setting the tank up properly for the style and system you choose for your tank i.e. proper flow, skimmer size and type, inhabitants, etc. Any tank set up against what it is designed to do will fail. A properly setup and maintained tank with balance will succeed with bare bottom or sand.

Gadgets your tank looks great. Keep doing what you are doing as it looks like you are doing it right. This is coming from someone with sand in their tank. :)

DSB tanks crash with alarming frequency. Even just doing routine maintenance can disturb the sandbed and release Hydrogen Sulfide gas and crash the tank. Yeah DSB can work for some time but how long? a year, 2, 3, 4 who knows. In my opinion it is too much of a hassle to maintain. Although I like the look of sand or something on the bottom, I think DSB has a place for those reefers that want to maintain it and treat it like another living organism in the tank.

No, no they dont.

For every DSB tank that crashed, I can find you a BB one that did.

I've seen too many 10+ year old DSB tanks to not realize that properly kept, they can last pretty much forever. Cut the silly Barebottom zealot crap, ok?

OK Guys let's stop it with the DSB vs BB. Either one can work with success. I have used SSb and BB and both worked very well. I know of many people W/ DSB that have beautiful tanks as well. In the end there are many roads to success. Chosse the road you would like to take and enjoy it to the fullest!

Hi everyone! I have been back and forth between tanks and have finally found one that i will LOVE. It will be here on Saturday if all goes well. Here is some info for u.

Well... As it's been said... I am going to be breaking down the two nanos as I'm receiving a much bigger tank. :) The tank will be here on Saturday. I have a custom stand being built that arrives the same day :) So for all of you that want to say, "I told u so" Please feel free to do so now. :D

I have always loved rimless/shallow tanks and have wanted to order one from quite some time. Once I saw Danskim's I couldn't resist and put in my order a week later. :) I decided to order it from glass cages. I am having a friend build my stand. I wanted it modeled after an Elos system. Since it is a rimless tank, I'll have a floating canopy similar to the one pictured below.

Tank:
48"x24"x18" (Yes that is correct... 24" deep and only 18" tall)
3-sides Starphire, Rimless, Black silicon on all seams, No trim anywhere, Corner overflow box w/ black cover.

Lighting:
(2) 250w Icecap Ballasts
(2) 250w Radium 20ks
(1) Icecap 660
(2) 48" ATI B+ bulbs in Icecap SLR T5 Reflectors
(2) 48" URI VHO Super Actinics

Flow:
(4) Tunze 6055 Nano Streams
(1) Tunze 7095 Multi-controller
(1) Eheim 1260 return pump

Control:
Neptune AC Jr
JBJ ATO System

Filtration/Misc:
Deltec APF600 Protein Skimmer
Deltec PF501 Calcium Reactor
Sanders 25mg/hr Ozonizer
Milwalkee ORP Controller
Phosban Reactor for Carbon

Here are some pics for you all.

Thanks everyone! The stand is taking a little longer than anticipated, but no worries. Means it's gonna be even better built! I should have it in another week or two. :)
