i have been looking at getting CaribSea Aragamax Sugar-Sized Sand from Marine Depot i need around 230 pounds of it but the shipping comes to more then the sand and they won't freight ship it, which out actually lower the shipping price on that kinda weight. is there any place cheaper on the net to get sand from?
thanks jeff

Why not get 150 - 200lbs of play sand and seed it with a couple of bags of live sand? Would be much easier on the wallet.

i have tried play sand once and it was really bad, looked great but after a year it started to melt and turn almost to goo

Goo? How was that pH? Where did you get it?

Jeff's exotic fish (my nearest LFS, but also a decent online store) seems to ship live sand by air freight:

I used play sand (silica) and I don't like it -- no issues, but it's not as white as aragonite and doesn't look as good. One of these days I'll change it out.

Premium Aquatics is usually pretty good about sensible shipping. Marine Depot may be closer to you. I've read good reviews of the sand from ESV, http://www.esvco.com/ I've also noticed that some of our LFS's have aragonite labled for reptile use priced cheaper than identical aquarium sand.

IMO you'll probably find vendors online prices for sand within a few cents of one another. It's the shipping that will make it seem outrageous. Considering you're in MN, try Fosters and Smith. I think they ship out of WI. Not too far from you. I'd try to find some local if at all possible tho.
