i have heard about something called chemi clean. It is supposed to be reef safe and kills cyano for a while. I have never used it mabe someone on here has. Best to be sure. i would think that it is only a band aid though. Algae is best controlled by lowering nutient levels and providing good water flow through your tank. what kind of skimmer are you using. Are you running bioballs??

If it is a new tank, then it will go away on it's own. Perfectly normal.
