My LFS has had a gorgeous blenny for about 2 months that I picked up the other day. I have dug through fishbase, books, sites, etc to no avail yet. The shop didn't know either, and they usually know everything there is!

He is about 2-3". A very prominent reddish/pink throat, red body speckled with white. His ventral fins are slender white with black stripes. He has cirri, haven't counted number yet, on head and above eyes. The pecs are kind of translucent, look feathery, with red stripes, but massive amounts of red/pink dots closer to the body. He is 'bulky', not slender like a lawnmower or other. A very very beautiful little guy.

Shy but eats frozen PE and picks at the rocks.

I don't have a pic to upload yet, will try tomorrow to post one.

Any ideas?????

thx!

Sounds awsome, I was considering a Tail spot but if someone can ID this guy I might reconsider, can't wait for pics.

I promise this weekend I'll get pics uploaded..he is very very shy, so far I have a little bit of video that I'll get posted. I can't wait to find out what he is, may be in the books and on the web, but a different color variant. VERY HANDSOME little dude! :)

Okay, this is the best I can do so far. He is very very elusive, and extremely well camoflouged, so I'm not sure how well you all will be able to really see the colors and details. I'll try to get some better this weekend.

Any id's WELCOME!!!!

looks like a nice colored rock blenny

I bet the color will change when it gets more comfy
right now, it looks like he is keeping a camo pattern

I'm not sure it's really camo, as it was like this the whole time at the LFS (about 2 months). I'll have to look more into rock blenny id's.

thx!

Hes a giant blenny...scarticthys gigas...probably.
Look at the size of the mouth!
Its a big one and if not S. gigas then a close relative.

Wow, good going Steve! This is the only pic I can find anywhere on the web, just the spot near the gill is the difference. Looks like it'll be about 8" ?? Do you have more info or tell me where to look for more?

btw, Airman, it is mysis.

Check out his Sea of Cortez counterpart....labrisomus xanti.
Of that one we know a great deal and they are very similar in every respect.
The males are bright red/orange in breeding coloration.
