Rhyzotrochus sp.?

Anyone ever heard of Rhyzotrochus before? Sorry if this has already been asked/discussed.

No really specific questions, I've just never heard of them or seen them before. Any idea of their requirements? Which corals are they most related to?

They are in the Dendrophyllia family. It's a non-photosynthetic Family. The bigger they are, the more they need to be fed.

I believe the Rhizo's are the biggest in the family.

There one of the current crazes. I saw one auction for something like 1200 bucks, and it didn't meet the reserve. Just a fad

current crazes!!i dont think so people have to be buying the species like crazy for it to be a fad coral i would think.these corals are a very deep water species and most coral collectors dont even get close to these guys thats why they comand a PREMIUM price .sometimes the things i hear on rc just blow my mind!dont know about everyone else but i would chew off my big toe for one of these guys!!!!this is a real rarity its not a purple monster or a true bonzai .

cool-yes. overpriced- in my opinion yes. there are many corals that are collected in deep waters. and although it contributes to the cost, i find it hard to believe a single polyp cost $400-$1000 to recover. people always swear that these are the hard to find coral out there. then before long its everywhere.be it dendros or be it acans....we've seen this song and dance from the industry before imo.

Exactly, I remember 4 years ago when it was impossible to get Acans. Now, any store you walk into has 10 of them.

just like acans, once the wholesalers start letting the collector's know how much they want them, they'll be much more cheaply available, just gotta give it some time, it doesn't matter how deep water a coral is, if the collector is going to get double for that coral what they could for a non deepwater one, they'll be going after them very soon

d.cribrosa is a sweet looking coral. looks like sps and lps hybrid lol. i really like the family but why cant they come in colors other then yellow and redish orange? imagine neon pink or blue dendros!

Because these corals are deep water or cave dwellers, the red, orange and yellow colors will look invisible underwater. Red, orange and yellow wavelength light is filtered out in very shallow water. Blue and Violet light can penetrate much deeper into the waters. So, if you want to be invisible deep underwater, red, yellow and orange are the pigments you want to be. If they were blue or purple they would draw attention to themselves, and would fall victim to predation.

I wasn't really sure if you were asking why these corals are that color, or you were just wishing out loud. :)
