View Full Version : What fish for prop tank?

I want to make my prop tank, slightly interesting, with a fish or two. I know sixline wrasses tend to eat a lot of unwanted bugs, but they're so common, and I don't really like how they look. Any other very interesting fish that would do great in a prop tank?

thanks.

i know this isnt the answer your looking for but id have to say none. fish can cause unwanted stress just swimming around and bumping into frags. yes you can do it and yes things will still live and yes there are fish that a perfectly suitable for a frag tank. but for me, a system thats dedicated to growing frags out shouldnt have a fish that can set that back even a small amount. jmo

how about a school of green chromis if the tank is big enough?

IMO, I dont think fish are appropriate for a prop tank. But if you wanted something...maybe a lawnmower blenny...at least they could help in keeping any algae at bay.

I've got a little kole tang (or maybe Shoal?) to munch algae

that's interesting, I'll consider a kole.

6line wrasse, dont need to be fed much or at all really and they are great insurance against pests

I'll second the 6-Line option... I've got one thats mean as satan's hand if anything unwanted shows up.. I love him!

very cool. I think I'll look into these guys too. The kole tang is a tang afterall.

Fish are good for corals...why would you 'not' want one or two?How about a foxface or rabbitfish? Foxface Lo's love to buddy up with Koles.;)

how so???

in a prop tank you dont want fish that are going to irritate the frags. IE: nipping at algae growing around them. Sitting on or around them ( hawks, gobys). swimming by them and knocking them over.

fish are just more of an irritant then beneficial...in a prop tank.

i agree with goby

some fish, may, however benefit more than harm. like a sixline will eat pests. that's what I was going for.

How about an african pipe fish? I know they should be kept in low flow, no coral or LR sort of settings, but so many people keep them in reefs.

You need a waste in there to feed the corals right ? If your worried just add calm fish.

i was just hoping for something interesting, that would help control pests.

You better read up on the pipe fish before you buy.The last print I read on them is the mortality is 100%.Feeding is the problem.

thanks. I've actually been researching them for about a week and a half now. there's not too much info.

I know for sure that the mortality is not 100%. You must be thinking about a certain pipefish, like certain ghost pipefish, nobody's ever kept alive.

thanks for looking out.
