Skimmer height question

I'm almost done with my DIY skimmer and need a little advice. The skimmer is 70" tall total.
How much space would everyone suggest between the max water height and the collection cup (where the bubbles will rise before going into the collection cup). I have double telescoping PVC things for adjustment.
Currently it's set so it can be adjusted between 5 and 10 inches, Does this sound good? Should I expect wet foam in this range? Dry foam? No foam? Thanks in advance, Brian.

Maybe my original question was worded poorly. What I'm asking is if you turned off the airflow to your skimmer how much space would be between the water line and the edge of the collection cup?

This question is open to everyone with a skimmer, not just a DIY.

Put the water level (with air) pretty low until it starts making foam. It can take a week or two (breaking it in). Then start adjusting the water level up (slowly) until it starts making dark foam in the collection cup.
