I feed him a piece of krill, or silverside 1-2 a week. It has been nice to watch him go from a pale little coral into what it is today.

Oh yeah it should be fine. Mine was about the same way. They like moderate flow and light. Keep him in the sand so he doesn't rip his flesh when he does open up. They mucus could just be some poo, it is usually dark though. When you de see some feeder tenacles out, start little, maybe some brine or mysis shrimp. If you have a turkey baster just squirt some on him. Then when he gets a little healthier krill and silversides. Good luck, any pics of him?
