Do people use canister filters in reefs, I have one but I don't know whether or not I should use it. Thanks

i would use it to run carbon or something of that nature. you can use it with foam filter media, but if you dont clean the media every few days then you will start to have nitrates....thats the problem with canister filters....they can become nitrate factories if not maintained.... but they are excellent to move water and run carbon... just my .02

I have a canister running carbon, anti-phos & filter sponges and not only does it increase flow, the amount of crap it pulls out of the tank is a lot, but I do clean the canister every week/2 weeks.

I think you and I are working out of the same playbook!!!!

wait what do you mean it increases he flow? Maybe I got the wrong thing, its an ocean clear canister filter and it holds the white filters its relatively large, I guess I ll just leave it empty since the lid is a pain to get on without it leaking. It's this right here http://www.aquaticeco.com/images/items/J325_rgb.jpg

It will suck tank water in & then push it back out, back into the tank, thus producing flow.

the main pump is actually pushing water in, so if I disconnected it I would just have the water go straight to the tank rather than through the canister filter first

Yep, I'm using a canister filter to run carbon 24/7. I only have carbon inside the canister. Works great!
