My general feelings with skimmers based on research and experience. I am sure that I have left out some great skimmers but that is due to the fact that I haven't looked into them:

Absolute best:
Bubble King - not commonly available. I think there is a long wait to get one. I have never used a bubble king. Have heard amazing things about them.

Really good:
Deltec - Have one on my 55 gallon and love it.
H&S - very good skimmer. Very similar to Deltec. I have no personal experience with this.

Very good:
Euro-reef - I use one and it really performs well.
ASM - A good skimmer that is probably the best bang for the buck. I use it and of all the needle-wheel skimmers I have used it seems to do the best job of pulling out wet skimmate. It is not so good at pulling out dry skimmate.

After trying various skimmer types I really like the needle-wheels the best. I am still using a beckett skimmer on my tank as well but it will probably be replaced by an H&S or Deltec in the future.

My turbofolater Multi is the best skimmer I have ever owned. If money was not an object I would buy a Deltec.

Tunze rocks for set and forget and quiet.
Coralife is great bang for the buck.
D.I.Y. six foot becket for sheer power (just ignore the noise and power consumption)

I swapped my ETSS 500 Reef Devel for a Jestkim 150 from Schuran and I am really impressed. Pulling stuff out that I figured the ETSS has got already, little did I know it was not doing the job.

This was 48 hours after initial start up of the skimmer

ASM ASM ASM ASM!!!
they are the best skimmers for the money IMO....for 150g look into the g4 series...when you get them on www.asmskimmer.com you can buy the upgrade with all the mods for a marginal price!!!
They are good skimmers without the mods but with the mods they are awesome!!!

Whats your price range? What is your Bioload ATM and possibly in the future?

ASM have good prices. ER also make good units.

MRC makes nice becketts if noise and electrical use are not a issue.

If you have more money to lay down I would say Deltec or H&S

Which are the most economical to have ?

I think the Tunze right because their pumps are really low wattage ?

Johnsteph10
02/19/2006, 12:53 PM
Most economical are Needlewheel (NW) skimmers in general. BK skimmers supposedly have the LEAST wattage used then deltec and H&S and then the new ER pumps.

Adamas
02/19/2006, 01:07 PM
Low wattage more then the Tunze ?

What are the BK ?

Economical? ASM.

The BEST? Bubble King.

The best of both worlds? Deltec.

deltec all the way. Euroreef is ok too.

I've been through several different brands. Currently, I have both Deltec and H&S skimmers, and I'd recommend either one. Both are great performers. IMHO, Deltecs are more innovative in terms of their product line, and H&S has a slightly better material/build quality. Because of the pump, the BK is outrageously expensive. Of course if you have the cash.....

02/19/2006, 04:51 PM
BTW.. If you buy a Deltec, you get the support of Doug who supports his customers with a passion (just follow the Deltec forum on any given day). With H&S or BK, there's Brian at Finsreef whose always there to answer your questions and provide help. I don't want to slam other brands here, but I haven't had this kind of support with most of the others.

If you want European input then i would say
Deltec
H&S
Aquamedic
I have a Deltec ap850 on my 120 gal and its superb, pulls out some really gross dark skimmate.

deltec would be my first choice. i currently have a berlin turbo and hate it.

I have an ASM G4X, a Deltec MCE600 and a BK 400ext. The best? By far the BK followed by the Deltec and ASM. It depends on what you are trying to do, what size your tank is and how fat your wallet is. In fact I am so happy with the BK I have ordered another one - 500ext. for my next tank.

Deltecs are good skimmers, but H&S would get my vote. I have not been very impressed with Deltec skimmers in terms of build quality. Especially for the price. Go to Finsreef.com and Check out the H&S 200-1260 skimmer, it should work well for your tank.

CoMMaNdeR
10/20/2006, 02:22 PM
Why are the H&S so expensive?

CoMMaNdeR
10/21/2006, 12:13 AM
The H&S 200-1260 cost about 899 dollars. Wow too expensive.
More then DELTEC

BryanJ
10/21/2006, 06:53 PM
If you dont plan on a larger tank or sump I would go with the Deltec 700. If you think you may increase the size of either then go with the 850. Most of the people here on RC would kill for a Deltec. In my opinion skip the H&S save your money and buy some nice corals.

Deltec AP851 .

Hey Guys, I was looking into getting a new skimmer too. I saw a skimmer built by this company called trigger systems and I am thinking of buying one. Any of you ever use one or have any experiences with them?
