I have a few questions for those running large-scale frag systems...

1) what size system do you run? pictures? type of equipment?
- A link to your actual system with info would be appreciated...

2) what were your costs for equipment? possible financial break down?

3) Monthly expenses (Electricity, h2o, etc...) and for what for?

4) 3 things you would recommend to a new large-scale fragger?

If anyone knows of a good site with info about large scale fragging (i.e. garf.org) lemme know.

Any other info you may be willing to share. I.E. word processor documents you typed up about/for your system... If you're willing to share um email them to me at [email protected]

Thanks much guys. Any and all feedback is appreciated.

BTW, For anyone thats curious to why i ask...

Within the next two years i hope to setup a large scale (600-1000+ gal) frag system as a business venture. In the meantime im gonna setup a 33 gal long frag system and practice basic fragging. In 2 years i hope to have $7,000-$10,000 to spend on the system.

Within that time i am going to work on my Business Plan. I am currently studying Business Marketing and Finance in school and should (hopefully) be finishing up within 2 years.

If my dreams here can come true i hope to have 12 systems rigged to 2 refugium sumps (6 systems/sump). Im going to start with 6 at first, but the plan is to setup 1 frag system per month providing a year of growth for each frag to grow.

So, if you have had fairly decent success with fragging corals for profit please fill me. If anyone is willing to be a mentor lemme know; i take good notes :) I dont think thats gonna happen anytime soon so im on my own to gather info

Robb if you are doing it for the right reason you are more likely to profit from this in the long run. If you are planning on getting rich off this you need to do some serious research and hire a staff of experts to help run the facility. I have made a few dollars with frag systems over the past several years but Im not in it for the money, Im in it to help take the strains off the natural reefs and in so doing I have managed to help our local reefers by teaching fragging techniques. If we as hobbyists do not act responsibly there will likely come a day when legislation will prevent harvest of most coral for the hobby. By setting up systems and teaching others we have the chance to increase the supply of healthy tank raised animals in our areas.

Best of luck to you though,
Ron

Make sure you get that college degree first. I enjoy growing corals and selling lots of frags, but I would never quit my day job.

Live somewere with cheap electricity and if possible access to cleanish sea water, and atleast cheap fresh water. Also if you use sea water you have to filter it six ways from sunday

This would be the same advice I would offer. Setup your facility somewhere with cheap electricity, free saltwater (NSW), and bright sunlight which you can harness to cut down on lighting costs. Might as well cut down on all your overhead if you can plan in advance.
