I want to add one final fish to my 29gal reef. I would like it to be a wrasse but dont know of to many, there is the six-line, but my brother already has one and I'd like something different. So what are some other reef-safe wrasses that would be comfortable in my 29? Please post pics of you own!!
Thanks

6-lines are the devil. I personally liek the 4-line better, and its less aggressive (IME) What about a leopard wrasse? (potters etc) Maybe a fairy/flasher or ornate wrasse.
many possiblities!!!

I love our six-line. He's been nice to the other fish, the coral and the inverts. He moves around a lot and eats pests. I couldn't think of anything bad to say about him.

Have you looked at the large Fairy Wrasse Post located in Reef Fishes Forum? Tons of pictures and information on Wrasse.

FishMaster1000, he hasnt touched anything yet, he is a great fish with great colors. I have 1 montipora but no acros yet and i hope he doesnt find a taste for them when I add some.

zemuron114, Im going to look at the 4-line right now, isnt he more expensive?

gfk, yes it will be a high bioload but you have to remember that my sump adds about 12gal to the system, so and overall of about 41gals. Also I do water changes every 2-3 weeks.

Rcarruth, that is what Ive heard, my brother likes his, im just worried he might pick on my gobies.

no.. that little wrasse is NOT reef safe.. While a juveline, its diet concists of SPS polyps. ;)

That is a cleaner wrasse.

Four lines look like this:

most 4-lines i see in Hawaii are a dark forest green with bright blue lines. Very cool. They should run you around 40$ or so. the 6-lines are around 25 i think?
Maybe a mystery wrasse :) they are only 200$ but very very nice!

You can do an eight-line instead. JD

Wow the 4 line is cool, Im thinking about him, would he be ok in a 29gal.

Dave, that is a cool fish. If you dont mind me asking how much was he, also do you think it would be ok in a 29?

jimbo045, Ive heard that they are really agressive, I think Im going to stay away from them.

Steffish, could you please post a pic of the blue sided wrasse?

And thanks again for the help :D

Dave, do you have anyother names for your wrasse, like a scientific name, I searched for it but didint find anything. That is a really cool looking wrasse, please give me more info on it!

Never mind Dave, I found him on Marine Depot Live. I think I might call some stores to see if any have him. A few questions, about how much is he, and is it an avalible fish, or will it take a while to track one down?

Patrick,

Halichoeres melanurus is the name of that wrasse.

Personally I'd be hesitant about putting one of those in a small tank especially with the fish you already have. But it may do ok... Dave has his in a 120.

Your angel or gramma may take offence to another "large" fish coming into thier tank.

8=lines get to big for a 29 (IMO). 4-lines will only get 3" MAX (if that) and ad lots of cool colors especially in a small tank.

so many choices :)

DJ88 and zemuron114, after looking at a few sites I was starting to think the same thing, it is a cool fish, but an adult size of 6in is too big for a 29. About how much to 4-lines cost? Also it is really nice that is stays such a small size!

Four lines usually are a bit more than a six line. Take a peek at some of the major online retailers. That should give you a great idea. :) I'd love to say exactly how much they are but I haven't bought a fish in so long I wouldn't know how much they are. ;)

they average at 40$. If they are asking more, they have crazy mark up. I wouldn't pay more then 45$ for an amazingly colored/healthy one. Your LFS shouldn't sell them for more 40$ (mine doesn't.. lol)

ok, thanks. One more questions, do you think the four line will get along with everthing in my tank?

zemuron114
02/20/2006, 06:00 PM
yes. There shouldn't be any conflicts unless one of your current fish has a temper :) The royal gramma might not take to kindly to him at first, but things should settle down. Maybe net the gramma first, introduce the 4-line, then re-introduce the gramma.
