glass over my 46 and 120.....i don't have any heat issues (no chillers just fans)....i use the glass top to reduce evaporation in the dry colorado weather

not using glass will increase evaporation, but even if heat isnt an issue the glass blocks some of your light and the saltcreep blocks alot of light, so no top or eggcrate is the best way to go in my oppinion

No top. My PC lights hang from the ceiling. There is a acrylic shield that protects the lights.

Maybe I will ditch the shield. Planning on upgrading soon anyway. Anyone else done this?

I have an acrylic tank. It covers half the top already with bracing. But it did come with covers to fill the rest but i dont use them. Try to keep it as open as possible for a clear view to light and air.

Just a hood with lights. I would never use glass tops as they reduce gas exchange.

Until a couple months ago, I had used a glass top. I love the tank even more now without the top.

No top on my 75g...
How ever my lights are enclosed in the PFO Hood, cooled by 2x 4" IceCap fans. I never did like the idea of bulbs over open water... Splash! Crack, Pop-Fizz! ;)

My tank has a enclosed canopy except for fans which have gaurds on them so fish can't get out, but no real top.

I have a wood canopy - with PC retrofit. no barrier between the lights and water. I leave door of the canopy open otherwise it gets too humid in there and the wood was starting to get a bit moldy

Eggcrate top a must if your going to keep fish. I have had 2 jumpers and one was a tomato that wasn't suppose to be a jumper. IMO they all jump. Here's a picture of my eggcrate top cut to fit.

Ok, I have a question. I have a 30 gallon with the all-glass triple tube flouesent bulbs. I use a glass top. The front of the glass top hangs over the front of the tank about 1/2" since I added my skimmer to the back. Now my question: What keeps the water from splashing up and busting the bulbs if I don't use a glass top?

the water shouldnt splash up and bust the bulbs i dont really know why, i think the amount of splash is so small it doesnt have any effect or maybe the bulbs are just tough.

How do keep the "household dust" from getting into the tank if you use a eggcrate or no top? I do weekly water changes and clean-ups and it seems I'm wiping dust off the top of the glass top every time.

mstump, for one thing fluorescent lights (atleast normal output bulbs) arent hot enough to bust if they get wet, secondly the water really shouldnt splash up unless a fish happens to flop at the top of the tank. Also alot of people use metal halide bulbs that HAVE to be a good distance from the top of the water for heat issues, so for many tanks that not really even an issue. In regard to the dust question many, if not most people have a canopy that hides the lights and covers the tank even though they dont have a "top" on the tank. The canopy allows the tank to breath but still keeps stuff from falling in or settling into the tank.

Same here, never had a jumper, just a little salt spray if the level goes low, splashes up from the Remora Pro.
Mine had 2 nice fitted covers, they started to yellow so I canned them.
