View Full Version : Reef keeper cutting off MH ???

I've owned a Reefkeeper for over one year with awesome results from day one, in fact I owned two reef keepers one for each 12 gallon cube I owned.

When I upgraded my tank to a beautiful 72 gallon reef, I sold both 12 gallon cubes and kept one of the reef keepers.

The reef keeper handled my 300 watt HQI Coralife MH, three maxi jets pump, sump motor. All flawless.

I did have a problem in the beginning with my temp probe going out and DA sent me a new one and the problem was solved.

Just the other day and today, my RK started shutting off my MH once every 4 to 6 hour intervals. I would be watching TV and the RK would hic up and shut off the lights and restart my system.

Then in 15 minutes the MH come back on and would go strong for another 4 to 5 hours, this happened even once during the night with the lights already off.

The only conclusion I can come up with after running my system flawless for almost 8 months on my new tank is that this happens during the weekend when their is more power being shared by neighbors etc.

As a matter of fact the RK did this a lot over Presidents day weekend when people are home.

I have not added anything to the RK unit as I do have one outlet on the unit not being used.

However I did connect a powerstrip to another outlet but not the same one the RK is connected to; to connect my Ozone unit and air pump.

Thats the only thing I can think of. Digital Aquatics do you guys have any idea what might be happening?

Concerned reefer,

Michael Guerrero

mikeguerrero,

Usually this type of problem is from ballasts. But what you describe doesn't sound like that. Is the temperature getting particularly hot where your equipment is?

Nick,

No problem with heat in the cabinet, there is a 2 inch gap in the back of that allows heat to escape.

I did read the entire thread posted by the other member regarding issues and solutions.

The only other conclusion I get, is that over the weekend I will reset my timers in order to enjoy the tank in the morning. Then on Monday I set them back.

Could this be one of the reasons?

Before I never would change the times at all... They came on at 1pm and shut off at 9pm.

MG,

I don't know if that is it. We never got to the bottom of that symptom. Only one customer reported that and we couldn't reproduce it here.

i think that customer they are talking about is me, the problem comes and goes, i have given up on this problem tho, they sent me a new one, and my co workers have been picking up my mail for me the past week cus i was out of town. So when i got back to new rk was at my work (not where my tank was) and the first thing i did was plug it in at work. Almost instantly (with in 5 mins) it kept resetting like a christmas tree!!! i was soooo ****ed off becuase this was a new one and like the 3or 4th time i was sent new parts. Tough thing about it is that nothing was even plugged into it yet, not even the temp probe. But anyways i switched it out eventually at home, and it has yet to do it....knock on wood tho.

unless nick or scott can clearify if the this problem was fixed in the new rk2, i will not be a returning customer.

asiankidd2,

What you experienced was unique, the more common problem is with electronics ballasts and we made improvements on the RK2 for this.

As far as you trying the RK2, it's simple, get it and if you don't like it you can always return it for a full refund. Remember the 30-day money back, no questions asked. Now, more importantly, I think you will find that even the RK1 should work for you if it isn't the ballast causing the problem, shoot us an email if you run into anymore problems with the unit you have. We'll make it right.

Hi nick i have been working with scott for a while now. You guys have been really helpful. I bought a brand new unit from you guys and received it today. Tested it out and began having problems right away with nothing connected to it, on a totally different power grid mind you. I just email scott with my situation, and have outline what exactly happened. I had asked him to review my situation with you guys back there to determine what my options are now. I am afraid to buy a new rk2 even tho i like it more than the aqua controller jr in terms of looks, but my original was working flawlessly for more than a month and then went out on me out of nowhere with no changes being made to the system. I already think im screw on the rk1 as of now because who is gonna wanna buy a 1 day old system that has problems from me? especially anyone from this board....please contact me with a resolution. thanks
