Sometimes it does take getting out of your comfort zone & putting forth a little effort to get what you really want.

02/28/2006, 10:57 AM
yeah i know...im getting that thirty dollar one from sharkys....i just wanted to see if there was a better value somewhere else...i dont see what the big deal is with wanting to get a good value on something.....i spend more money on my tank then i do on my care and girlfriend combined already....im not going to buy something for thirty that i can get for 20 or 15...but now that i know i cant and that i know the people at sharkys are cool im going to buy it from there...im also getting a pom pom crab from them at the same time i get the mantis...should be sweet.

02/28/2006, 04:25 PM
is the pom pom the first meal for the mantis your a hell of a guy to treat him to a crab dinner on fat tuesday
Pufferpunk
02/28/2006, 04:27 PM
I don't understand the unwillingness to pay $30 for a mantis & then feed it a $20 dinner.
johj26
02/28/2006, 04:49 PM
well he wanted the 50 dollor mantis you buy the 30 dollor one feed it a 20 crab and you get the 50 dollor mantis.but seriosly you should do more research into what your buying you really cant keep anything with a mantis not even another mantis without it making dinner out of them, its basicly best left to someone who knows what it is and can handle it correctly.

I'm pretty sure he knows that. He wanted to buy my decorator crab to feed to a mantis.

A Mantis will be more than happy to eat prepared foods. There is really no reason to feed it live anything.
rogerwells
03/02/2006, 10:36 AM
yeah there is.....if you dont let it use its smashers then the appendeges will fall off durring its next molt....its kind of like if we didnt use our arms to eat then they just fell off all together....if the mantis isnt allowed to smash, say a hermit crabs shell then the smashers ill be useless and fall off.....now i am going to feed it prepared foods like frozen krill and other stuff like that but once in awhile it needs some live food to eat.

Interesting, I never kept a Mantis, and I guess never had to know that little nugget of Mantis info. It's good to see that you already know that before obtaining one. It shows that you are researching prior to purchase. ;)

I've been doing some research on them myself & haven't come across that info. I did read that you need to be sure of what species you get, cause some get quite large.

yeah....well i remember i think dr roy say it in the mantis forums...and he studys them so basicly whatever he says i read it and remember it

Could you post some pics of your new crabs, once you get them?

Roger, I just saw the Deep Sea show (thanks CMAS!), at the IMAX (Navy Pier). You've gotta see the part where a 10" mantis takes on a big octopus & chases away by punching him! It loooks like you won't have to feed yours live fish, as it can use it's claws to break open mussels etc, that you can get from the produce store.
rogerwells
03/03/2006, 03:12 AM
oh...well dont tell that to the ten hermits i picked up today....well from time to time i think ill give it something live you know cause its a predator and thats like if you take a t rex and feed it like toefoo or something like that...
Pufferpunk
03/03/2006, 10:28 AM
I have 7 predatory puffers. 1 of them even hides in the sand up tp her eyeballs, waiting for something to swim/crawl by, so she can ambush it. She eats frozen shrimp. I rarely feed them live food.
rogerwells
03/03/2006, 01:16 PM
well i dunno man....we already taking these predators out of their natural habitat now we cant even give them the food they want....im sure your puffer gets bored waiting for a live meal and all its getting is dead stuff...i just think if im making it live in a 12 gallon cube the least i can do is give it the food it wants.
Naperville Reef
03/03/2006, 01:24 PM
imo.... there is no issue with feeding live food. the frozen food was once alive as well, only to be killed for the purpose of feeding our fish. so what is the difference????
Zoalander
03/03/2006, 01:40 PM
I agree with Naperville Reef, it's nature. I hate to see a cow butchered but boy am I craving a steak right now.

Roger, Do you know what species you are buying? Some of those guys get quite large-->12".
rogerwells
03/03/2006, 02:51 PM
yeah the guy said it was already 4" and i doubt it will get to 12" i think it might be a smithiie but the picture isnt really that great...if its a smithiie then it should be alright in the 12 gallon....i got a lot of rock and im getting more for it in there...so it should be fine

You still gotta see that mantis fend off an octo in Deep Sea 3D!
