View Full Version : Anyone know where I can find blue velvet nudibranchs?

I have what is apparantly a incurable case of red flatworms. I thought that I had them beat at least twice, but they came back. I need to take a different approach this time.
Does anyone know of a vendor that has these nudis in stock?

Larry, do you have them in your display? or sump/refugium?

Country Critter gets them in sometimes--but they go fast. you can just call them and ask-save the trip if desired.

have you tried a grass wrass? they normaly love flatworms, but will eventually munch pods

I believe that they (red flatworms) came to me in a bag of pods that I got in a trade with someone. They were originally just in my refugium (where I dumped that bag of pods), but eventually made it to the display. I have treated three times with FWE. Each time, I thought I had them beat, but they came back.
I believe that my manderin was eating them, and I tried a 6 line wrasse, too. It's odd, the FWs seem to cover rocks, and patches of sand, but leave corals alone for the most part.
What bothers me most about these things is that I can't trade stuff with anyone. Who wants some Chaeto with fws, or a frag mounted on a nice piece of live rock with a few FWs hiding in the rock?
No, they MUST go. I will get rid of these things if it means breaking down my tank, drying out all the rock, and starting again.
The Nudis are my last chance. I'll try Mark @ Parrots, if he has 'em, they are going to cost almost as much as they would at Critters. At this point, I'm willing to spend what they cost. No doubt, I will need at least five of them.

My experience with FWE was to double the recommended dosage and leave it in the system. That worked for me anyway and no casualties.

What is the active ingredient in FWE? Is there any way it could have been a bad batch or expired/denatured in some way?

When I used it (at the recommended dose), I found that it did effect bristle worms, spaghetti worms and pods. I think most of them recovered, but so did the flatworms.
My hope is that I can seriously reduce the numbers with the Nudibranchs, then FWE the system.
Habib (Salifert) promises that FWE hurts nothing but FWs. The reason you see stress in other critters when you use it is that it's killing FWs, and dead FWs are releasing a toxin that's effecting the other critters.
As long as that's the case, and I do trust Habib, I should be able to dose heavy, and extend the time of treatment, hopefully killing any FWs left behind in the plumbing, or other places that the Nudis couldn't get to.

What is the active ingredient in FWE?

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I don't see where the MFGR could benefit from us knowing that. We make our own Ca/Alk additives, and anything else we can cut companies out of. If we knew what Habib uses to kill FWs, I'm sure a lot of people would try to group buy gallons of it to get it cheaper, and turn it into a loss for Salifert.
I will ask Habib to chime in here about shelf life and dosage.

In my display they never took off, I do have a mandarin in there, but I had them heavy in my refugium, I once tried FWE and it did kill most of them but in two months they were all back, now, not sure if this was a coincidence but I brought home half a dozen hermit crabs from our local Long Island waters and within two weeks they were down to nothing.
It has been over a year now, the hermits are still alive and no FW in sight.

I hate hermits! I might be willing to try some in my 'fuge, but I'm not putting hermits in my main tank.
I'd prefer not to have to drive to Manhattan to get the Nudis, but I will if I have to.
