I have a asm g1-x skimmer, I am putting it in a 30g aquarium I am using as my sump, 36x12x16 are the dimensions. How deep does the skimmer need to be in the water, I have never used one before, up to what point should be under water?

thanks

At least enough to fully submerge the pump. Once you get the skimmer tuned to a particular depth, keep it stable. If the water level in the sump drops you'll see a decrease in skimming efficiency and if the water level rises you'll get more water in the collection cup.

I have a Euro-Reef RS100 and the recommended depth is 6 to 8 inches. I keep mine at 7. I am not familiar with that model, but I bet if you went to there website I would hope you could find the answer to your question.
