Randy,

I have finally traced what I hope is a Calcium Hydroxide Kalk mix at an astonishingly low price - £3.67 ($6)? per 25Kg.

The company calls it a High calcium Hydrated Lime suitable for water treatment.

Does this sound any good? especially compared to the $24 I have been paying for 500ml

Thanks

I discuss grades in this article:

if it meets this specification (I'd ask), it is probably OK, but not perhaps as good as a food grade:

Water Chemicals Codex is a grade that is described by the Committee on Water Treatment Chemicals of the National Research Council. The grade is specifically listed as suitable for treating potable (drinking) water. Consequently, it focuses on toxic impurities, as shown in Table 4. The specification is the same for calcium oxide and calcium hydroxide. ESV claims to meet this specification.

Randy,
Thanks, I'll post results for the other UK guys who may be struggling to find a reasonable cost alternative, when I next talk to that particular company.
