I have ich and have to put all my fish in to QT for hyposalinity. In about 5min Im going to swap 5gal from my diplay to 5gal newly mixed water in the QT. How long do I have to wait until I put the fish in, as long as the temp is the same does it matter?

The best thing to do is fill the QT with tank water, put the newly mixed water back in your main tank. That way, the fish are changing locations but keeping identical water when you move them over. Then, over the next few days, lower the salinity by changing out 25% of the QT water at a time with straight RO/DI water. You can do these water changes every 12 hours, or once per day.

Exactly what Jeff said.

The water is alreadly changed, so I dont think I can do anything about that anymore, but anyways, when can I put the fish in the tank even if it isnt all tank water?

What about swaping like 15gal right now?

Why didn't you QT the new fish before you put it in the main tank that gave all your fish Ich in the first place?

How many gal is the QT? I'm unclear on that. You shouldn't put fish in freshly mixed saltwater, even though it looks mixed to the eye, it doesn't fully dissolve for a while. The fish can get tissue damage from it otherwise.

The QT is 20gal, so should I take out like 15gal of it and put 15gal of the tank water in it?

I'd swap 10g, then put 'em in.

The water was mixing for 4 hours before I did the water change

Yes, fill up the QT with water from the display and then you can immediately transfer the fish over. Preferably take a sponge out of your display that has been in there (so it has good bacteria in it) and run it in a HOB filter.

Canister is as good if not better than a HOB filter. Do you have a sponge from your display in there or is it a clean sponge?

Freed, once I get all the fish in I will start hyposalinity, then about 4-6 weeks in the QT. Im going home during study hall to try to get the rest of the fish and Ill put a sponge in then.

Be sure to monitor your ammonia levels closely. I kept a HOT filter running on my tank for 2.5 weeks before using it on a qt and I am having ammonia issues. Doing frequent wcs and using ammo-lock seems to be working to keep the fish happy, but if you don't test ,and intervene, the fish will just die of ammonia poisoning instead of the ich.

Thanks for the heads up reverendmaynard. OK I got home from school today and only had the clowns in the QT since I couldnt catch anyother fish last night. I checked the temp and both tanks were the same, so I started, I caught both Shrimp gobies and the Royal Gramma in about 30min, then re-aquascaped for another half an hour while the QT tank light was off so the fish wouldnt be as stressed out during the change. It has been 20min and everting in fine. Now Hyposalinity, Can I sway 4gal of my QT water with 4gal of Distilled at 6am tomarrow, then wait till 12pm the next day, then do 2 more 12pm changes and hopefully I will be at the right level. Another question is if the pH starts to drop which Ive been told can happen, what do I do?
Thanks for the Help!!!
Patrick :)
