Finally, it has begun! Hello friends I know this is not a big tank in comparison to the others we see here, but this is my big tank. I figured I could not do a new tank without documenting it here. It wouldn't be fair considering Reef Central and its members have been my sole inspiration for it, alright enough talking lets get down to business. This is going to be a slow process so bear with me. The cube is 40Lx40Wx27.5H, the stand was built by a local carpenter and stained by yours truly :D. Lighting will consist of 1x250w MH 10,000k XM and 4 36" 95w URI VHO's 3 actinic blue and 1 actinic white, I will run the VHO's using 2 separate ballast for a dusk to dawn effect. The sump is 32Lx22Wx20.5H it has a section for the skimmer which will be a ASM G4+ (which has been in back order for the past 3 weeks) and a section for the refugium. The return pump is a Panworld 50x-x, and I will be using a Sequence Dart for my closed loop. I do not have a calcium reactor simply because it exceeded my budget for the time being, but I am working on it. here are a couple of pictures of the stand, canopy and some of the accessories that I have bought so far.

I have a tank about the same size as yours 36x36x24 and i am using a dart as a closed loop with 4 holes in the bottom glass

It was very hard for me to plumb the closed loop in such a small space but now, i can sit back and enjoy the tank with all those waves on the surface!

Here's a picture of it:

I2ik your pluming is awesome, very professional and I know what you mean about it being difficult to plumb, also I have a huge sump which is not helping, but I'll figure it out.

good start. Stand looks like pine. In case I missed it, who's building the tank?

It is pine, and the tank is being built by a friend of mine, which is pretty much the top guy in building glass tanks in south FL, lucky me, the stand was also built by a local carpenter who is a friend of mine, and I must say I got a pretty good deal.

and thank you for the kind words Bax.

Looks like a great project.

Do you plan on taking everything back apart to paint the inside of the stand and canopy? I would strongly suggest you do so. The canopy, for the added reflection and protection that a nice gloss white paint will provide, and the stand for the protection.

Unprotected pine will rot pretty fast if it gets damp.

I got it locally and the nice part is that I only used those boxes to transport it home, I actually picked out the 100 LB's my self and they were already cured :D, I thought about ordering the rock, but I know you get a lot of rubble when you do, and some of the Fiji is lighter that others, so I got 100 Lb's that actually looks like 130 Lb's, I could not even close the boxes when I got them.

Hey guys I'm having a hard time deciding what do do about the substrate, I've ran BB tanks for over 10 years and have always had great success, but I always miss the look of something in the bottom. I do not like star board, and I'll probably never do a DSB, what do you guys think about 1/4" layer of sand or crushed coral for pure aesthetic reasons, something I would vacuum every week if not more often, I do not mind the maintenance, but I am really ready to try something new. You're going to be really happy with the Oceans Motions unit, we have the 4-way on a sequence dart running as a closed loop and it's awesome. We got the adjustable nozzles from them too and those work really well too. We're also running an ASM G4 and have been pretty happy with it. Can't wait to see the tank.

I am with you on the sand, it makes a reef look like a reef. Maybe a blend of sand and CC would be easy to vaccum if you are willing to do it regularly. If not theres another cube thread here where sand was epoxied to starboard, it came out really nice!

Zoos

Yeah I' ve seen those faux sandbeds but they are only nice at the beginning, after a while they grow all kinds of algae and it looks funky!

Bax
03/08/2006, 09:23 AM
I can imagine that you would have to use something like an algae pack to clean them with and then the coraline would still take over eventually... I like sand.

Hey Chip, do you have a G4 or a G4plus? also how big is your tank?

It's a 180, but we've got an Oceanic Model 3 sump and a 100 gallon refugium so total system volume is probably fairly close to 300 gallons. I think it's just the G4, it might be the G4plus, I'd have to check the box.

The tank looks great, are the 2 bulkheads drains in the rear corners? How hard was it to plum the Dart for the closed loop? My tank is being picked up this thursday and being remade to correct some sloppy seams. So more time to sit and wait :(
But I will be watching yours for ideas :)

Zoos
03/13/2006, 09:42 PM
yes the 2 BH's are 1.5" drains for the dart, and hard is not the word in was a PITA! cubes are not fun to plumb, you have an extra 8" though I'm not sure if you have a dedicated fishroom or not, but if you do, lucky you, now I know why these guys have fishrooms, well I don't have the space, I'm working on a budget, plus I have limited space. anyway that was a fresh water test and I already drained it, I have a couple of tiny leaks through the thread PVC on the dart. not enough teflon tape I guess, I will fix all of that tomorrow, and try it again, hopefully no more leaks.

It's ok my hopes weren't down, I worried for a second because I take everyone's opinion into consideration, but don't be sorry you did nothing wrong :), and yeah the price seems to be right :D, although it will interfere my budget a bit since my next buy was going to be the Korallin 1502 calcium reactor, but this seems to be more important at the moment. I would also need to buy a pump for the chiller, probably a mag 5 or 7 whatever it requires, and I also need to buy some timers and some seios too, but little by little.

Gorgeous tank! Similiar to the direction i am heading, 36x36x30... I am now worried tho. that you are having these heat issues... I would suggest double checking your temps w/ a few different thermos. I am not able to see anything on your tank that would cause this kind of heat. If so something maybe improperly functioning. Just a heads up before you go slapping a chiller on. I have dual t4s pumps on my tank now, known for running hot, but i am still well below needing a chiller.

Edit, i am in orlando so i am not far from you. Few hours, i know the temps aren't that different. Also where did you get your tank from. Would definitely like to continue shopping around.

Thank you for the compliment ThunderousTalon, but don't worry about your heat issues, mine are for different reasons, first of all it is under 2 skylights, and second my A/C is not working properly, I have a 2 story house with 2 central units, one for the room, and the other for the living room, kitchen, dining room, that one has been acting up, and it finally died yesterday. I just added four 4.75" fans to it yesterday, 2 for the stand and 2 for the canopy, and it already dropped to 79.1 degrees with the lights off. That is still with a broken A/C, I'm sure that when I fix the A/C I won't have heat issues anymore. Also my skylights have blinds on them, I've just been to lazy to close them, :D I think that will help as well.

Well my temperature is under control now, so I took down my 10 gallon that will be used for a QT now and transferred everything to the cube, here's my GCB and my little possum wrasse, I also added about 20lbs of Fiji from the 10g, plus I bought another 20lbs of real nice Fiji, I couldn't resist, there's also a bunch of little frags, mean greens, fire and ice, green laced clove polyps and a couple of others.

I would really like a school of Threadfin Cardinals, I would also like a Purple Tang, and some anthias, not sure which ones to go with yet, I'm considering the Sunburst but they tend to hide too, Squamipinnis are great but tend to be a little aggressive, decisions, decisions.

Thank you very much. I've don't a little rearranging lately so it looks a little different on the other side. I also did some major pruning on that cap and the acro to the far right.

I'm in the initial planning stages of a 36x36 semi cube or a 48x36 but I have to do some work to my house before I can really get started. Some tank related, some not. But either way, I'm in desperate need of an upgrade or a prop system or something to handle the growth of my corals. I'm considering going with almost no rock in the display to give the corals all the room possible to grow out for a few years without pruning.

Anyway, your tank is coming along nicely and I'm looking forward to seeing it mature.

Thank you ReefWaters, let me know how much you get quoted for and who's going to do your cube

Im actually thinking about building it myself. I want it to be rimless and braceless. No one Ive talked to WANTS to build it that way. They also jack UP the price b/c they make the glass thicker.

I only got a few quotes and they were verbal so I dont really remember them exactly. Im pretty sure Miracles In Glass wanted about 900 for a 36 x 36 x 22 cube and about 1200 for 48 x 30 x 22. Aquarium Obsessed wanted about the same. Maybe a little more. I think you can get one from Glass Cages for around 500 or so. And then of course tack on at least 200 more for shipping.

I can get the glass I need locally for about 350 to 450 I think. And no shipping. From what Ive read, you just silicone the pieces together and fill it with water. It actually sounds seductively simple. But the glass I got quoted was not polished like Miracles and Obsessed. It would just be a sanded edge. I think I can live with that for half the cost though.

Thanks again for the compliments.

I really like the rimless and braceless look with no hood. Like the Japanese tanks. If I had a hood that sits on the tank, I would definitely go with Eurobracing. I want to basically build a short canopy/hood that will hang over the tank with the bottom edge about 10 to 12 inches over the tank rim.

Here is a pic of the tank from http://reefaqua.com

zoos, did you reduce or split the outlets for the CL that come through the bottom of the tank or did you just leave them as the 45s? Also, how are you directing them? In other words, where are they pointed in the tank?

Im still debating with myself as to whether I want a CL and/or Tunze Streams. But I know I want to get rid of all the powerheads. I wonder if the Streams alone would be enough. I would go with two mounted in oposite corners. If so, thats what I would want to go with. But if not, I would want to add the CL with a four way OM with all four outlets coming through the bottom of the tank. Then I worry that it would be TOO much flow. Of course, I dont know if there is such a thing as too much flow.

What do you guys think?

04/12/2006, 08:11 AM
I just cringe at the thought of how much it will cost me to do this. Can I afford it? Technically....Yes. But I will have to sacrifice a lot of other things to do so. I also have to consider the fact that that money could be used as an investment instead of spending it. So there is technically a small loss of income if I do it. It is my passion though and it can be compared to buying a small boat or joining a golf club. Probably cheaper actually. I also worry about wanting to upgrade that system eventually. And then what do I do if I move. Sure I can move the whole system but would I want to? And if I wanted out of that system, could I recoup even a small amount of the expense?

Sorry for rambling. These are all rhetorical questions. Chime in if you like. :D

hmmmm. the bigest question i see is ...will you be moving? and What is your financial state?--dont need details, but could you actually aford what you have proposed?

Okay Okay Okay :D Can I pay for it outright? No. Could I use some extra (left over) money from a home equity loan to pay for it? Yes.

But really this is what bothers me the most. I dont REALLY want to use loaned money, especially money meant to increase the value of my house, to purchase a tank. But again, there are 100 ways of looking at it. People take out loans all the time to buy a sports car or a boat or a pool, etc...... is there really a difference? For some reason I feel like there is. Maybe just b/c reefing is not as popular or widespread as say boating is.

alien9168

hmmm...heres my take...on financial issues, which can be touchy. Maybe its just me, but I myself wouldnt take out a loan to pay dor a sportscar, pool, or boat, simply because they are luxuries that i wouldnt want to be put into debt as a result of. A tank, especially one of this magnitude can certainly be put in the luxury catagory.

I really wouldnt take out a loan to pay for a tank this large. Its not an investment that will make you money ;)

So, my advice is to save for a little while, or, if you are fairly well off, take out a loan, with the condition that you will able to repay it fairly quickly. Loans can be a mistake, and I dont mean to be the bearer of bad news...that really isnt my goal :(

All I'm saying is that with an investent this big, you really dont want a loan hanging over your head. NTM its not somthing that you need, like a home, or food...etc.

If you have a fairly steady and high income, put some money away and youll have your tank in no time. Just dont take out a loan unless you have to.

If $$ is a tad tight at the moment, maybe go with a smaller tank.

Again, I dont want to tell you what to do, and if you got a big tank, I'd deffinatly be there eging you on, but for now, i'm just saying what i would do, based on the information you have provided about what you want, what youve got, and what your reasoning is. :)

Now that I think of it, we have seriously hijacked your thread zoos. Sorry buddy :(

alien, you are 100% correct. I have the same opinion exactly but there is always that thought process of "I want it and I want it now" that makes people think and do stupid things. :p Im definitely going to hold off for a while. I may go ahead and set up the room to be ready for the monster but just set up a small display or only a prop style tank. I really need to get the tank out of my main house and that would work nicely. Thanks again for all the advice.

Now zoos.... how about an update or a picture or something to get this thread back on track? :D

Oh yeah, and without looking back through the thread, what pump are you running the CL on? Could you put an OM Squirt or Super Squirt on there. They are a lot less money than the 4 way. Have you thought about ever doing that?

Zoos
04/12/2006, 07:18 PM
Hey the thread was actually getting interesting there, and you are doing the right thing by waiting reefwaters, I did this tank at a bad time, and I spend foolishly, DO NOT spend money that is not yours (loans, credit) do it with extra cash that would otherwise go towards another luxury, because this is what this is. A luxury, not a necessity. I have spent over 3000 already and my initial budget was about 1800 and then get the rest little by little, but I could not wait so I started to spend in a hurry, anyway patience is a virtue in this hobby. now back to my tank, I am using a PanWorld as my return pump, and a sequence dart for the CL

BTW I like the irony in that. LOL

Poor guys and 1000+systems don't belong in the same sentence :D

ReefWaters

:D  Yeah, I was going for the sarcasm in that!

Yeah, its definitely a luxury. I WILL NOT be doing anything stupid like leveraging a tank. I've spent about 4500 in two years. It kind of makes me cringe but it was all paid for out right and I do prefer it that way. Anyway....

I think I have decided what I'm going to do. :p As if it wont change 100 times before it gets done. Ima going to renovate my sun porch, which needs it anyway, and put my existing set up in there. Ill get rid of the 10g fuge, use my cube as the new fuge, keep the sump the same, maybe add a mangrove tank made from plywood, and probably get a 100 ish gallon tank from GlassCages. Here's the trick though, Im going to get a tank that is low and long and will some day become the prop tank for a larger display tank. See, Im planning ahead! :D

And I should be able to do all of that on spare cash over a few months. How does that sound?

Hey felix- another question for you...

Could you comment a bit on your selection of lighting for your tank and how it seems to be working? I'm especially interested in wattage of the lights, and where you mounted them in the canopy. I'm kinda grappling with this issue right now in my plan.

I just ordered my stand and canopy, so I'm actually doing it kind of backwards- doing the tank around the stand! Lighting is really a bit of a dilemnna. I guess the footprint of the tank (40"x40") is a little tricky to figure an affordable and functional lighting array!

Thanks for your feedback!

Hello everyone sorry it has been so long since I wrote but my computer kick the bucket :( and it is actually still getting fixed, I am writing from a friends PC, anyway back to you algaeguy I have 4 3 foot 95 watt VHO in this order from front to back 2 actinic blue, 1 actinic white, and one actinic blue, in between them I have 1 250 metal halide, I did this all with the intention of having real bright light in some areas and real dim light in others, as I'm very interested in some of the non photosynthetic species and I am also interested in some of the fish that appreciate the dimmer environment like the sunburst anthias I figured I could accommodate everyone. my halides are only on for about 4 or 5 hours a day and the rest of the lighting is on for about 10-12 hours. hope that helps. BTW I redid my aquascape I do not have a way to show you guys since I need my computer to upload the pics but as soon as I get it I will. thanks

I'm in limbo land. My tank is recovering from me messing with it for the past few months. Its getting better. I'm still trying to decide exactly what I'm going to do. I know for a fact that I'm going to move the tank out of the room it is in and when I do, I will set up a larger display. I hope to use all the equipment I have and all the support tanks. I think it will be fine. I'm still pretty young and have a lifetime left in this hobby. I'm going to take it slow. Its worked for me so far.

Sorry to hear about the computer but I cant wait for some pics either! :D

Zoos
04/24/2006, 10:57 PM
I knew I was going to get that, :( and to be frank I was 100% happy with the old one and I liked the design of the old one better, but I had to. It was not good for circulation, too many dead spots and I have plenty of flow, if you look at the old one it was like two walls, this way the flow is used more efficiently.

Looks good. I have to admit I liked the old aquascaping better as well, but I understand where you're coming from on flow. I have problems myself.

Just a suggestion, I would add (or move) a few rocks into a pile (or two) in front of the main structure. You have a lot of open sandbed there. It would be like a small island and you could put some cool corals on it. It would create a small valley as well. Something to give some "secret" viewing spots. Does that make sense?

Okay, I have a few opinions/thoughts on the aquascaping. Just my opinion. :D

I liked the old look better too. But.... I did see some potential problems. And I can account for this from experience. Im dealing with it right now. I would give yourself a lot more room between the rock and the glass than you had, and more than you think you will need. I have several corals growing onto the glass and several more that I have removed from the glass in the past. Its not a big deal at all on the back wall. But when they start growing onto, or even just close to, the viewing glass, it gets to be a PITA. It makes it hard to clean the glass and if you try, you usually break the coral.

Just my thoughts. I would maybe even consider moving some of the less attractive LR pieces to the sump or fuge to make more room.

I will post it in the selling forum, I will only sell the tank and equipment, and I am keeping the livestock :D and will hold it in a buddies tank till the new one is up and running.

sorry for not replying sooner felix. my computer was broken until just a day or two ago.

Its a shame you have to sell the tank, but this truly is an amazing project, and I look forward to your next build!

why not save some of your equipement from this tank for your next tank? just curious. It shouldnt be that difficult to transport things like the skimmer and lights etc... the stand, tank and canopy would be the largest problems.

Well, I finally made a decision on my next set up. I am going to renovate my sunroom and turn it into a fish room. Im going to have a 150 gallon (60x36x18) in-wall display with the tank in the sunroom/fishroom and the display side facing into my living room. Im really excited about getting started on it. Ive already gutted the sunroom walls and after a little more cleaning up, Ill be able to start making some real plans. I need to run electrical and plumbing, change out all the windows, sheet rock, and add A/C. Its going to be a job but I think it will be worth it. Ill start a thread when I get some more progress and some more pics to post.

Keep us posted with your progress zoos.
