Whats up guys. I am setting up a 28 gallon reef this week, and remember a post in here about someone using Bio Spira. I am thinking about using it and just wondering what you did and if you hit any bumps along the way! Thanks! Anyother input welcome of course;)

I used it 9 months ago on a 30 gal and 2 weeks ago on a 55 gal. Instant cycle. No spikes of any kind. Package says you might see an ammonia reading, (very low) but it's a false reading. I also have a friend that used it to set up 2 90 gals and a 290 gal, with no spikes. Has the same results as a cycled tank. Mike

:)....You added fish the day after you added Bio Spira? Sounds real nice!! Cannot wait, hopefully to try it out! Thanks!

Nice...Cannot wait to get this setup! How many and what type of fish did you add after the 24 hrs on your 30 gallon? I would probably add the same amount you did since the tank is relatively the same size.

I used it on a new 120 a year ago with no ill results, not sure what it did, tho. Tank was successful.

ribs, I'm glad I'm not the only one out there that tried it. FishMaster, I put in 2 clowns 2 yellow tail dansels 1 fire fish and a watchman gobie, and tons of different corals. ! week later, 30 hermit crabs and 20 snails. I've had great success, so i've tried SPS corals with only PC lighting.Since I set up the 50, I added VHO lighting. Are you setting up fish only, or Reef? If you go Reef, I know this guy up north Jersey, that his prices can't be beat. Mike

I used it on 3 tanks and added fish next day, the one fish only setup with Eheim filtration, I feel it helped, but the 2 12gal reefs, I am not sure, the product states that it will give false readings of total ammonia and I suspect that I am experiencing that. Overall I would pass on it next time and go with the tried and true cycle methods.

I will be setting it up as a reef. North Jersey is to far of a hike, I rather just stay local. Thanks anyway!

what is bio spira?, from what ive read, it speeds up the cycle of a new tank, does anyone know the long term effects of it, although im sure once the bacteria gets growing in the tank, it would overtake any "bad" the bio spira did, where do you get it from??

jer, I don't know the long term effects, first tried it 9 months ago on a 30 gal. A friend of mine been into salt water for over 35 years, raising rare fish for a lot of salt water fish stores, turned me on to it. I was into salt 25 years ago, till my seam split on my 125 gal. I lost my life savings on all the rare fish I lost. I got out. Anyway, I ran into him 9 months ago in Tropiquarium, in Ocean. He talked me into setting up a new tank, with all the new products out there now. I asked him for some culture from his Eheim ( thats the old way to cycle you're tank faster) He brought me over by the Bio-Spira freezer with the owner( both laughing at me cause I didn't know bout the new product out there) They both assured me , I can use this stuff and put fish in the next day. I trust this guy with my life. I set up a 30,added salt, added live rock that evening, Bio the next morning, and 4 fish that evening.I checked the water 4 times a day and watched the fish closely. After 4 months of paranoia, I only started checking 1 time a day. I set up a 55 about 2 weeks ago with Bio again. Softies, SPS's, LPS, fish, all doing great. George K. thank you.

Hmmm, where have i been, guess im old school too.

im gonna fill my 180 this week, i have about 90 gallons running thru the sump and fuge now, with about 150 lbs live rock (+ or -)

if i decide to go the bio spira route (not sure yet) i can get it from the fish store, and just dump it in?

sounds too easy, and yes, i am being a bit paranoid, i need to search ths out, to get more info on it.
