I'm getting a new sump with a place for refugium. I'm getting some cheatomorph algae to put in it. Do people put sand in the bottom of their fuge or nothing? Also do you buy critters to seed in it? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm trying to get prepared.

You can go either way it is up to what you want.

If you are planning on having a high flowrate through the refugium to keep the chaetomorph rolling you might not want sand if it is going to be blowing around.

If your flow rate in the refugium is slower, I'm sure any critters you are growing in there would like a little substrate, and the extra surface area for bacteria can't hurt.

I would actually implement a DSB if i were you. About 4-6 inches deep. You can just take some substrate from someone else fuge and put a some live rock in the fuge and let it sit there for a couple months with the chaeto and you will notice pods going crazy. Dont be fooled into paying for these pod packages when you can do it urself.
