my budget is a little tight right now and I can't afford a full blown RO/DI unit yet.. I was wondering if the regular "Fridge water filter" is a good substitute for RO/DI water? Something like this:

It's gotta be better than Tap water, right? But to what extent? Is this effective when it comes to filtering excess nutrients to control algae?

Thanks

It depends on your source water quality. Either way it will be better than using straight tap, but it is not a substitute for a good RO unit.

Using my TDS meter my tap water is 170, Frig water is 75, RODI unit is 0-3... It's better than using it out of the tap, but...

If its all you got, its better than tap water... but its still no RO/DI or even RO.

Won't it still have chlorine in it?

I don't think so since it would probably use carbon. But I would imagine it would still have chloramine.

What about using two of those in series?

in ---->filter 1-->filter 2---> out

My local Home Depot has em on sale for like $5 a pop
