i was wondering if changing my salt would drastically effect my tank?
i currently only have live rock in it. i would be switching from red sea to instant ocean. local stores carry IO thats why the possible change.
Thanks
Daniel

I haven't heard of any problems with switching between those two brands, but I'd take it easy and try some small (maybe 5%) water changes to start the switch.

It would not be a problem at all...

Each salt has its downfalls and benefits.

Some mix easier

Some have high calc, low ph

Some have high alk (buffer)

Some have other trace elements

I would say find a salt that offers the most complete or closest to natural seawater solution with the least additional addivities.

IO seems to be a fav of numerous aquarist and has been around for decades.

I like Oceanic, and Reef Cyrstals, but thats me.

I will only buy Oceanic in 50g jugs, and never in large 160g buckets due to nitrate issues.

Reff Crystals is great, but doesnt disolve nearly as quickly as Oceanic.

Tropic Marin in my opinion is way way overrated and pricey.

Heard grea things about SeaChem's product but I never used it.

good luck
David

FYI one24fan

I recently mixed up a 50 gallon batch of water using Instant Ocean to a salinity of 1.024 by refractometer. The water was out of a new Kent HiS RO/DI and had a TDS of 0.

PH = 8.3
Alkalinity = 4
Calcium = 300

Very high calcium readings

You just have LR in the tank so you shouldn't have any problems at all.

IO is a fine salt.
