Black or Blue?

Is it better to paint the back of the tank black or blue? I am tossing betwen the colors and hopefully to get some opinions. What looks better with all the other colors?

That's all personal preference and after the tank matures it will/should be covered in coralline algae.

Black usually wins out. For me, it also nicely matches the black stand.

I vote black. Is it better? I dont know but I think it looks better :)

I've had 2 tanks previously. The first being a very aqua blue which I very quickly grew to dislike as it looked like an LFS & certain fish & corals didn't stand out very well against it. The second I painted black which was a marked imporvement but again I grew to dislike as I found it too dark. My third tank which I am in the process of setting up will be a midnight blue colour.

I think the the blue gives the tank a look of depth and the black makes the rock and fish pop out. I like blue on shallow tanks--12 inches front to back-- and black on deeper tanks--18 inches or more.

If you paint the back of the glass tank, is it possible to remove later if you decide to change your mind? I have a aga 90g ordered and still have not decided on what color to paint the back, leaning towards black though.

if its glass you can scrape it off with a razor blade.

I don't know if you can do this but, can you have it start blue at the top and fade darker to black as you go down?

If you are unsure, you can go to the LFS and buy those backgrounds and tape them to the outside back. This way you can change them later on. Personally the light blue is too bright, but black can be too dark.

You can make your own opinion, but this may help.

My first tank had the blue background and I think it took away from what was in the tank, which I did not like.

My 2nd tank had the black background and you can see a definate improvement in the look and how you can see the corals and fish better, which also gives it some more depth.

Now here is a picture of when they get covered with coraline algae, the blue still looks very dirty and off compared to the black. This of course is just my opinion, you choose which you like better.
