my mag 7 return pump stopped working, i plug it in and nothing. please forgive my ignorance I don't know much about how a mag pump works, but can this be fixed by replacing the impailler? figured I ask before buying a new pump.
I have a mag 5 i use for water changes so I threw that on for the time being but if someone has an extra submersible pump 700 - 1000 gph I am looking and would rather buy used to save some $$$$

They are very easy to work on. You can try soaking it in vinegar first if you are reluctant to take it apart.

Otherwise, you can remove the four screws on the housing located around the intake. The impeller is the only moving part. Carefully remove it and scrub the shaft and impeller compartment gently with a small brush. Again, you may want to use vinegar to loosen up the gunk.

Hope this helps!

i have nothing to loose right now as it doesn't work at all. when I plug it in nothing happens, it doesn't make a peap. I will try and take it apart and clean it, if that doesn't help do you think replacing the impeller will get this thing going again?

It might if you do, but I would really take it apart first since there might be a piece of dirt stuck in the magnet and impeller itself. My pump seized last night as well, and I took it apart, cleaned out the nasty gunk in the shaft, and lo and behold, the mag7 lives again to run the skimmer!

bob you can try to do all the above, or buy a impeller for a mag 7 try in your old mag 7 and if not work, well you can replace the impeller in your mag5 with the new mag7 impeller

agreed on taking it apart. sometimes even coralline gets gunked in there and if it can't spin, you won't hear anything out of it.

just took it apart and cleaned it out, put it back together and nothing. should I even bother replacing the impeller? what are the chances that would fix the pump?
anyone got a mag 7 or 9 or something similar they want to sell? :D
