I have just built a new refugium. Have heard great things about miracle mud but also heard it makes no diffrence between it and a DSB. I have also seen some other brands of refugium mud. Would these work just as well (They are quite a bit cheaper)? Thanks for your help!

In the 2006 Marine Fish and Reef Annual magazine, the article by Dr. Charles Matthews says that Mud will have to be partially replaced after 18 months, and may become phosphate saturated over time. The mineral content of Mud is greater, though, and seems more beneficial than a DSB, as long as it is replaced accordingly.

I would use no substrate in a refugium but that's me.

Bare bottom refugium here, too... A DSB or Miracle Mud could help a tank, though, depending on how big the refugium is, and what other filtration the tank has.

I have a DSB in my refugium, but have been thinking of getting mud as more of a form of a supplement since you can just mix in a little bit at a time to get the remineralization effect.
