Hi guys,

I currently have a 72 bowfront with the intentions of making it a strictly sps dominated tank only. I'm looking for the best lighting for my sps, yet at the same time, the most energy effiecient. I understand halides are the best option, but I have also heard the T-5's are equilavent in output. Is this true? Would a 48 inch T-5 fixture be good for tank? If so, what wattage and how many would you say would be good? Where can I get the best price on this fixture?

I appreciate your help

I have seen one tank (75gal) with 4x54watt only growing SPS. Check out this thread:

"If so, what wattage and how many would you say would be good?"

I know I'm not really answering your question, but with florescent lighting, wattage is dependant on the length. If you get 48 inch bulbs you cannot vary wattage....of course wattage varies depending on type of florescent T5, NO, VHO etc...

Im thinking either the 48" Tek Light: 4-54W T5 or the 6-54 watt light. What are the best looking bulbs to get. I plan to have dusk/dawn simulation. Im also looking for a daytime look that looks about 14k.

The 6x54W setup would give you a few more options to fine tune your color because you have 2 extra bulbs to use to adjust the color of the light, and would let you keep a wider range of SPS at all levels of the tank.

BTW, are you getting the fixture or are you going to be doing a retrofit inside a canopy?

If this is for a canopy, you should also look into the Icecap T-5s. They're reflectors are better than the Tek reflectors, and the Icecap 660 ballast will slightly overdrive the bulbs for even more light.

I agree with PiNaPLeX on the IceCaps. The 48" bulbs go up to 80W (48%increase) with the IceCaps with no effect on the life of the bulb. And their reflectors are considerably better (10-20%)than the Tek reflectors (not that the Tek are junk, just that the IceCaps are better).

the tek 6 t5 setup will not fit a 72 bowfront. it's wide, unless you don't mind it hanging ovet the front of the tank. i have the same delemma. i'm looking at the finnex 6 bulb fixture but not sure of the quality of the fixture and hardware. check out www.finnex.net

I have the 80 gal bowfront with the same footprint as the 72 gal bowfront. the depth of the tank just before the bow is 12 3/4 inches. and the width of the tek 6 bulb fixture is 15 inches wide. therefore you will have a overhang of 2 1/4 inch in the extreme corners of your tank in the front. that's why i'm considering the finnex. the only other option is to build a custom cover for the tank and use retrofit fixtures
